I have to format and reinstall my OS. I am a fair way through ROTTR so obviously dont want to start again. Is there any way that I can pick up from where I left off when everything is reinstalled?

The game has the Steam Cloud enabled meaning that as long as you were connected to the internet the last time the progress was saved, it will simply redownload your save games on any new machine or reinstall.

Well I'm constantly connected to the internet so I can only imagine it's saved it.

I'll chance it.

If it doesn't work I'd tape your letterbox shut :p

be careful not all saved games are stored on the cloud as some of the lego games are stored locally on the PC and not saved to steams cloud service.

not too sure about the game in question though

I found a load of files in my steam folder user data with names like lastcamp.dat. The files were created last night when I last played the game, so I would imagine they are the save files. I have copied them to a USB stick, so hopefully that should do it.

Steam games normally save their saved games in My Documents. They'll either be in the root of My Documents or in a folder called My Games.

It's unusual for Steam games to save player data into the actual Steam install folder. Usually it will go somewhere within your Users folder. Normally a folder within C:\Users\Username\My Documents or C:\Users\Username\My Documents\My Games

Most Steam games also save to the cloud if you have this feature enabled via Steam : Settings : Cloud. To check if a game is cloud enabled, view your games library in list mode (View : Games List) and look for the cloud icon.

Yeah I would just back up all your saves to usb. I assumed all games saved to the cloud. Lost all save data for witcher 3 / Fallout 4 New Vagas and loads other. Only shadow of mordor seemed to have save hah

Not played this but I found this on steam forum

You should know where your Steam folder is located. Since this is a Windows only game the default path of the Steam folder should be:
Windows 64bit: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\"
Windows 32bit: "C:\Program Files\Steam\"

Your Rise of the Tomb Raider save files should be located at:
"Steam\userdata\<Your Steam ID>\391220\remote"

Save files of RotTR will look like this:
- lastauto.dat (Last Auto save)
- lastbackup.dat (Last Backup save)
- lastcamp.dat (Last Camp save)
- save1.dat (Manual save in slot 1)
- save2.dat (Manual save in slot 2)
- save3.dat ...

You also got:
- profile.dat (Account/Profile information)
This one is most likely also very important as it is in most games.

If you want to backup all your save files locally (which is a good practice if you care about it), I suggest you backup the whole "Steam\userdata\<Your Steam ID>\391220\" folder.

391220 is the Steam-ID of Rise of the Tomb Raider by the way.

Check out Gamesave manager. Scans your computer for installed games, and gives you a list so you can select which ones to back up. I usually run it when reinstalling, to catch out any games which don't save to standard locations.

Oh how I wish how there was a industry standard for save locations both locally in terms of file locations instead of having to search everywhere for each game and hope you get the right path. And I wish everything would use cloud not just select games.

There is. It's the AppData folder in Windows.

Unfortunately devs decide they know better and ignore the recommendations, which is why we end up in this mess :(

4 most common places

%appdata%
userdata folder in steam (requires lookup of game code in google/steam)
My Doc's default username folder
or the game folder itself (rare to find it in the game folder these days this is more for 90's games)
