Strange one this and rather specific, but I am unable to find a clear answer on it via google. Its all seems to be speculation and fear mongering.

First of all, let me clarify, I never have and never will use a VPN on my steam account. I literally have hundreds of games (if you click on my sig you will see the extent of my library) and I do not want to risk access at all to them.

I have been a steam account holder now for around 13 years, and it was opened in the UK when I lived there. I purchased games directly from the steam store, and in later years from 3rd party resellers, usually GMG or CDkeys.

About 3 years ago I moved myself and my business over to Asia (mainly India) and I spend around 90% of my time outside of the UK. I have my main desktop for my library, but I also have a laptop which accesses steam as well so I can access it on the 'road'. The 'road' includes Singapore, Australia, the US and Eastern Europe.

When I did the move, I emailed Steam support about the situation and informed them that my IP was going to be very dynamic because I move all of the time. They told me no problem and advised me to keep my store set to the UK, and this is what I have done. It doesn't matter where I am in the world, everything is priced in sterling. I suppose I could change my store to the Indian one and pay in the rupee (in a lot of cases its a hell of a lot cheaper), but I dont want to have issues down the line with an account which has games purchased in multiple currencies.

Now this isn't an issue in respect of buying games directly from Steam, but with the 3rd party resellers, my question is this. Does those games that have regional restrictions pick up on my steam settings (i.e the UK) or does it pick up my geolocation based upon my IP? So if I buy a UK key will it work? Or do I need to buy an Asian key?

I have purchased keys since I have moved over, but I have always made sure its a truly global key with zero restrictions. However this isn't always possible.

Is anyone able to shed some light on this at all?

As someone who has travelled the world with work i have also taken the safe route of keeping everything UK, Steam, Origin XBox/MS accounts the lot.
I took our point of view that it wanst worth the risk just to save a couple of £ when i have hundreds of games at risk.

Only one i ever had a problem with was origin, and once i spoke to an adult not the idiot on live chat they fixed it straight away.

Dosent it say on these websites where the key will work etc? Like this key is not for use in Indonesia and what not?

Yes generally if its region restricted it does.

For example the new South Park game. I have seen numerous versions of that because of region locking.

CDkeys do a US version and a European version it seems.

GMG give you a key based upon your geolocation.

Safest bet was for me to buy it directly from steam, because I want to be able to play this on the road. I dont want to fire up my laptop in a couple of weeks time and have an issue playing it because of my IP address in the US.

I know a lot of people use a VPN for activations etc, but however small the risk, its a risk, and my account must be worth thousands!

This seems to be the same route that I have taken, unless I can truly get a 'global' key from a reseller, I buy it direct from Steam.

The only issue I have ever had relates to Origin.

Dragon Age Inquisition is unavailable in India (some apparent issue with the ability to have a homosexual relationship in the game.....yes I know....thats how ****ed up the mentality can be over here), and although I purchased it when I was in the UK I had an issue playing it over here. It wouldnt show up on my account.

One chat to Origin and they put an exclusion on my account that allowed me to play it. In their mind I wasnt breaking the law because I purchased it outside of the country.

Nothing online works in Indonesia,
I got in trouble for bringing my brother in law a copy of demon souls a long time back.
