So I backed up Steam before rebuilding my PC and have tried to restore it. The backup is about 150Gb and I set it off at 8am this morning. Over 12 hours later and the progress bar has only made it half way across the screen.

Is this normal?

just copy the games over and then check integrity of the games before youplay them, ive never bothered with the whole backup/restore

Copy/paste or left on a different partition is a far easier way to backup Steam, unless you absolutely have to back it up to DVDs. Even then I think i'd rather try and RAR the whole thing up into DVD sized chunks.

Steam Folder and portable HDD = win.

Aye :)

I'm not looking forward to reinstalling my Steam folder, as I hadn't made a backup of it before the drive it was on died (fortunately i've got several of the bigger games on DVD).
But when it's planned an external drive only takes an hour or two at most to copy that sort of size folder :)

I did the same thing, I had about 150GB worth of stuff and it took about 15 hours to finish restoring it properly. At many points Steam became unresponsive/slow.

I imagine it is because Steam isn't designed to work with such large files, so I guess next time I'll split up over several files!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing :D

Cheers guys, I suppose I'll just have to let it restore this time, but back it up the way you suggest in future. I think my ISP might disconnect me if I try and re-download it all!

Last time i did what you did it took me about the same time to restore the folder- I actually downloaded the files faster from steam 2nd try.

2nd HD option is the pros way )
