Ok im 100% new to using steam, the system of steam and downloading games is slow however i notice that when double clicking any installed games from the steam list there always seems to be quite a delay in it launching the program even with old programs like opposing force.

Is this just my pc or is there steam doing something else besides just opening a game which you would imagine to be a pretty simple task.

My download for Company of Heroes & Opposing Fronts was pretty fast, DoW2 idled about 50-60k & Titan Quest seems to be going nowhere - then again, my internet is sporadic at best. Game loading takes very little time - a little longer than a standard install, but no more than a few seconds so. Perhaps if your computer specs were available, people could see? Don't be shy, I was running a 2800 Sempron with a GeForce 4700 LE until about a month ago. I didn't sig it, but now my new rig's running I've got nothing to hide.

yea its only the inital startup of games thats slow.

Its a 2500+ with a 9800 pro with a 1gb of ram, not the fastest of systems but then again its very old games ive been playing and even them seem to have a massive holdup during start up.

There is a delay on most computers as the hard disk is quite slow bringing steam up. Since i moved to ssd though it's sped up no end for me.

Keep the hard disk defragged etc and the wait shouldn't be too bad.

ah aight man, just seems to suck the way things are going to play the same old games you always did you now need a quicker computer :S confusing.. im sure i played halflife on my 166mhz pc back in the day!

Odd that deadbeat, I was reinstalling TQ and Immortal Throne won't update at all.

This is the problem I'm having. I figured it was a temporary thing, like I say my internet is sporadic right now. During the other downloads I got the same freeze on 'updating....' - no % or kb rate - a few times, but when it reappeared it kicked up from 86% for DoW2, so I'm hopeful still. Was it just IT that wouldn't update? Did TQ get by okay? I'm leaving IT until later, unless there are drastic changes to the main quest imported from the expansion - are there?

I remember an old friend and I building a 586 inside a fridge, we got HL running on that. For about 8 minutes, then something popped. I must have been about 13 at the time. Good days.
