firstly- why bother implementing it, what's the purpose?
secondly- what the hell do i do with 1000 gems?
thirdly- what can someone who doesn't care do to stop getting a notification tray full of "you have a new item"?

1st - Fun for collectors.
2nd - Sell it on the market or convert into a trading card pack (random 3 cards from a game)
3rd - Don't think you can unless you're playing a new game with cards.

Don't turn cards into gems, sell them on the market.

I know it takes effort but from card farming and then selling on the market, I've got back a little over £20 recently and still around 170ish cards on the market now. I did have a lot of cards to obtain though. Wouldn't bother with gems and I also don't care about my Steam level.

wait, there's levels!? what is this!!!

Converting cards to gems is pretty much a waste...much better to stick them on the marketplace using tools such as enhanced steam and steam economy enhancer, although you will need the mobile authenticator to do this with any ease. Steam booster drop frequency increases every 10 levels so at level 40 you're at double the drop rate as you were when you started, so there is a little point to building steam levels and you'll see a more regular influx of cards as you level up.

You'll see your steam level if you look at your profile.
