Well it had to happen.

My daughter / grandson were here over Xmas and he had Train Simulator 2017 for Xmas. With help from here it was installed and she bought him some extra routes on Boxing day.

Problem today - he seems to have "bought" 5 add-ons over the last 2 days without realising it (and she left a PayPal account attached in steam without realising it).

He is adamant that he put nothing in any "Cart" or clicked pay BUT from the payment history £27 has been deducted. How did this happen. I am not going to try and see how it happened as this will probably result in another payment!!

I have deleted the payment method now but am concerned how he was "tricked" - he may have just thought he was viewing the extra route?

Any one let me know how this happened please. (this is why I have deleted any payment method from my Apple account!)

Thanks, Mel

erm whilst i can't say how exactly this happend other than being a kid saying they haven't done something that they probably have (we all did it at one point) though i can say that to buy them steam HAS to come up and prompt payment. The game can't just take money from your paypal it all goes through steam.

If you go onto steam, and click your login name at the top right and go onto account details then you get to a page where at the top you can "view purchase history" go into there and click onto the offending ad-ons in there you will be able to request a refund. Or tell them you was charged a wrong amount and explain the situation.

Hope this is of some help to you ( steam have been pretty decent with their refunds recently )

EDIT :

It could have been a lot worse,

This is with most addons @ 50-80% off i think it's typically around £2,800 to get everything.

Steam gives clear and precise payment options. If payment options are stored (they are on mine), it is an easy way to buy but again, it is very evident that you are agreeing to pay money. You have done the right thing by removing the stored payment option.

Probably purchased the items ingame. Steam is a bit sneaky when you pay via Paypal in that it auto-ticks a box saying something like 'make payment easier next time'. This adds Steam as a trusted vendor to your Paypal account and as a consequence does not bring up the Paypal window when making future purchases.
Removing the payment method is the right thing but check your Paypal account too and remove Steam if it's listed itself in seller preferences as trusted

Ehhh Funny this has popped up,

I bought the Witcher in the Steam sale and then tried to buy it again as I had no Paypal page pop up. Seems I had linked my PP account to steam and therefore was auto authorising payment. I was unaware it was set up to do that. However checking payment methods seems there is an "Paypal account" and a "paypal" option when checking out. The account option when selected, is authorised without needing to enter any Paypal details and the purchase is completed nvia the purchase button in steam...

Not sure if there is a store page in TS17 as I have not played it in ages.... The add on packs for TS are ridiculous TBH

Thanks - he has bought them as it shows up in payment history - he is just not aware he has bought anything!

Before an order is placed on steam, you need to review it which tells you what you're buying and what payment method you have used, this applies if you have a PayPal account linked as well.

You can't click buy and it will purchase it without you knowing, unlike 1-click on Amazon for instance.

If you haven't used the parent sim for more than two hours, then you should be able to get a refund on the add-ons he doesn't want under the buy and try scheme.

Bear in mind that to get enjoyment out of TS2017 you pretty much need to purchase some of the DLC add-ons to supplement the supplied routes.

This is what you will be greeted with every purchase.

It is impossible to buy anything in TS2017 without knowing that you are doing it. There are two ways to purchase add ons, the normal one being from the DLC tab on the TS2017 store page on Steam where you go through the normal multi step process of buying anything from the Steam store. The second is from the ingame store tab, although this doesn't seem to work for me most of the time I believe you still have to go through a similar process to purchase anything. You can't buy something without it being obvious that you are doing so.

Like someone else said, to get the most out of it you need to buy extra routes and stock and I gave up tracking how much I have spent on this over the years. It soon mounts up.

Not to mention those of us who build routes for the sim, often need to reference assets from one or more of the DLC routes so to run a freeware route you might end up shelling out for several of the commercial add-ons!

Which add-ons did he buy? Some such as the WCML North or South (or anything crafted by Keith Ross) are well worth keeping!
