Steam - transferring game content

Hi guys,

I just bought Left 4 dead on steam and downloaded it. I want to play coop with my flat mate. I want to move all the game data over to his computer so that we don't have to download it twice. Then he can buy it and activate it.

Is this possible on Steam?

Basically, start to dl it on his machine, then pause it, transfer all the files then validate the install and it should work fine.

actually just transfer it over first, obviously into the right directory then try to install the game through steam, itll see all the files are there and then spend 5 mins or so validating and then work fine.

Didn't even do that the last time i did it. Just copy it into the same place in Steam folder, my Steam decided it was upto 99% downloading and it was ready to play in about 5 seconds after i 'continued the dl' and it decided it had nothing more to do.

Though i'd say to buy it before you transfer it, probably won't make a difference really but no reason not to.

Or you can use the backup option and transfer the backup across.

I find the backup option slower, than a direct file transfer. But it validates either way, so its down to personal pref I guess.
