Steam weekend deal: 75% off Command & Conquer 3/4

Fun read:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westwood_Studios

In August 1998, Westwood was acquired by Electronic Arts for $122.5 million in cash. At the time, Westwood had 5% to 6% of the PC game market.[1] In response to EA's buyout, many long-time Westwood employees quit and left Westwood Studios. Because of this and EA's newly imposed demands, games being developed by Westwood Studios at the time were rushed and left unfinished upon their release, namely Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun.[2] All the subsequent games developed by Westwood were also heavily subjected to increased control by Electronic Arts, with some of them being cancelled.

Along with Westwood, EA had also acquired Virgin Interactive's development studio based in Irvine, California.[1] It was managed by Westwood and became known as Westwood Pacific, and later EA Pacific. Westwood Pacific developed or co-developed games like Nox and the Command & Conquer: Red Alert's sequel Red Alert 2, which takes place in an alternate universe to that of the original title Command & Conquer. One of the last games released by Westwood, Command & Conquer: Renegade (an action game, which mixed elements from first-person shooters and real-time strategy games) failed to meet consumer expectations and commercial goals Electronic Arts had set for it. In March of 2003, Westwood Studios (along with EA Pacific) was liquidated by EA, and all willing staff were assimilated into EA Los Angeles. Their last video game was the MMORPG Earth & Beyond.

Best ever example of how awesome EA are.

Interesting - I never got very far in Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun. What was missing for it to be deemed unfinished?

Dont know tbh, just maybe a rushed / buggy release. I didnt buy it until after the expansion was out and didnt know anything about EA's takeover or anything like that back then.

EA touches golden PC gaming studios and turns them into soot. The magical touch of EA.

Unfortunately, they also managed to steal the rights to my favorite ever strategy game, Alpha Centauri. They aquired Firaxis, but Firaxis managed to get away from EA after releasing SMAC. They kept the Civ franchise, but lost the rights to Alpha Centauri to EA which is why theres never been a sequel.

And right now they are ruining bioware.

Tiberian Sun wasn't unfinished as such, it just lost a lot of the more advanced things that were hyped up. Advanced AI for harvesters is the one thing i can remember, it was supposed to have the harvesters avoiding areas they'd been attacked in and such but by the time the game finally released they were reduced to fairly dull AI that done nothing special.

One thing i've never understood is the general hatred towards Red Alert 3 on here, honestly can't see the big issue with it since i've always found it fun

Yeah what is it that some of the gaming crew on here don't like about RA3.

Follows the main lines of a C&C game, has funky units, graphics are nice.

i dont think i like sci fi in my command and conquer, so tiberium wars didnt click with me.

its still better than ra3 which was utter drivel and im actually quite curious to try 4, it sounds a bit like company of heroes which I like.

makes no sense given that all c and c games are based on sci fi?

I didnt think RA3 was as bad as I was expecting. It still had the stupidly cheesey and fun cut-scenes which really make the series. The bit I was worried about was the fixed point ore gathering, but that turned out not to be as bad as I expected.

The bit that did annoy me was the co-commander cobblers. Much prefer solo campaigns that are actually solo!

PK!

I don't understand all the hate for C&C3 beyond personal preference and bashing a game simply because it's EA. I really enjoyed C&C3 and Kane's Wrath and they're probably my next two favourite games in the series after Red Alert and the expansions.

I nearly bought these in the last sale they were in and had to resist temptation for a second time! :p

Already completed Red Alert 3 and have retail copies of both Tiberium Wars and Kane's Wrath. However, I do have an unfortunate addiction to collecting Steam games! :p

All that said, I can't help but feel they'll put the whole lot of them up for a tenner or so sometime or another so will resist for the time being.
