Steam Won't Install

Because apparently the install folder has some unknown files in it.

It says the same thing wherever I try to install it, what can I do?

Install it to a new folder if possible? or delete what's in the folder?

If I have misunderstood what you are saying, then maybe try re-downloading the steam client or disabling AV?

I have tried, it comes up with the same error whichever folder I try to install it in.

do you have multiple drives?

Have you had steam installed previously on any of your drives?

Formatted what? I haven't formatted my system since I installed Vista.

Nope, just one drive. I've never had steam installed before.

turn uac off
right click installer, run as admin...

worth a shot.

failing that, create a new user account and try there

You could always try valve tech support maybe, never used them but they might know? or google randomly and hope for the best?

I googled for you to. I came up with a few posts mentioning safe mode and cleaning the registry.... the only things I can think of is formatting and speaking to valve support...

I'll give them a try, how do you clean the registry though? Short of doing it by hand?

Try running CCleaner or Revo on the registry, making a backup if offered, to clear any hidden registry files.

Tried CCleaner. Still not working though.

I can't reformat because I have nothing to back up all my photos and documents onto.
