Anybody know what it is? I have to cycle over Annerley/Sydenham hill to get to and from work and it's got to be up there!!

Anerley Hill is at most a 10% gradient. There are some places that are 15% (Saltbox Hill, Tandridge Hill Lane and Spout Hill, to name a few) though they're not as long as Anerley Hill. There's a short section of Gangers Hill that's close to 17%. I don't know North London at all, so I can't say what hills are up there.

I forgot about Succomb's Hill and Tithepit Shaw Lane in Whyteleafe; both are over 15%. I'm intrigued now, I'd be interested to know if there's anything steeper than Succomb's Hill within the M25.

Edit: I'm also not sure about the gradient of Anerley Hill, I'm just going by hikehike's estimation of it.

It's the top part that is the pain in the butt!, I would guess at about 12%, It's not as steep as Succombs hill, which my friend actually lives on, that is one I would like to try out on the bike!

I live along that road, but used to love on top of Sydenham Hill station (other side of Dulwich Woods) that was a fairly steep hill going from Sydenham Hill to the Dulwich Woodhouse pub!

I had a bet with my boss that I could get from Croydon Road - Tesco Express on the crossroads (i think its Dulwich) in 10 minutes - and won!

I nearly passed out afterward!

I remember standing at the bottom of Cypress Road in South Norwood and thinking that it was the steepest hill in the world ever. No idea what the gradient is though.

AFAIK Crystal Palace area is one of the highest point within the M25. Which is why I've they've put a big sodding transmitter here to cover the whole of the LSE region.

Ena Road in the pollards hill district of Norbury is reknown for being pretty brutal. Canonbie Road in Honor Oak/East Dulwich is signed as 18%

The worst part is that unlike Anerley Hill it actually gets steeper the closer you are to the top, with Anerley Hill it eases off a bit near the crest of the hill.

Succombs hill is a beast, I'd hate to try cycling up that on my bike as i'd probably fall off into oncoming traffic :D Near the top it's a 2nd or 1st gear job in a car.

I would say the longest steepest hill inside the M25 is Westerham Hill (the one that drops down from Biggin Hill to Westerham). Crystal Palace is pretty hardcore to ride up and it's nearly vertical at the top :D but Westerham Hill pales it into insignificance. I haven't tried to ride up it but trucks and lower powered cars struggle to get up it from about halfway up.

I think it's one of the hills on the Hell on the Ashdown ride in February.

The Hell on the Ashdown looks like a decent training route. I think I'll give Westerham Hill a go this weekend to see if it's as steep as you imply :)
