Steering Rack Failure?

Hello,

I've got a bit of a small issue with my girlfriend's car - 1999 Peugeot 206 1.4.

It had a nasty knock, so was booked in to be looked at, and 2 lower arms, a droplink and a driveshaft were fitted. Now, since then, the car's been pulling to the left. The tracking's been done, and is straight, so I can't think of any reason why it would do this.

The place it was "repaired" at informed us that it would probably be the steering rack, one of the hydraulic rams had "lost pressure", therefore it pulls.

The only other issue I can think of is that the offside rear (drum) brake is also binding, however, shouldn't that make the car pull right?

Any thoughts/ideas?

Thanks :)

did it pull before it went in? I'm going with no. So it sounds like they've cocked something up, replacing the lower arms is going to have an impact on the geometry - sounds like they've not done something right.

That's the thing, we're not sure/can't remember. The tracking itself has been checked, as is fine. 4 wheel alignment needed perhaps?

Spin the steering wheel both stationary and at slow speed, does it give equal pressure and resistance in both directions of turn?

Stick your fingers in and around the front tyres when posting straight at 9oclock, 12 and 3 on both front wheels and see if you can discern a difference on either side, ie is the wheel set forward or back in the arch.

It would only need 4 wheel alignment to check if you have bent the rear beem. Its going to be something upfront, not the rear unless your girlfriend drives it like a tank.

Can you scan a print out of any geo/tracking reports that have been done?

The tracking was done manually by eye (by a trusted mechanic, family friend). Something I forgot to mention was that the car has been repaired from a fairly hefty knock - we're going to measure from wheel centres on both sides to see if the chassis is straight.

by eye ?

Yeah right.

Get it done properly.

By "by eye", I meant using an older tracking device, that gets its reading from looking through a lens, across to the other side to attain a reading.

If you're not sure what I'm talking about, use your friend wikipedia ;)

i thought you meant he took one look at it, sucked through his teeth a bit, closed one eye and went *yeah thats about right*

lol :p

I will admit that my phasing was a bit ambiguous :p

Just remembered, it was done "properly" too, with a laser tracking machine :)

Do the old school "manual" equipment just give a total toe figure?

If both wheels were pointing to the right by the same amount would it read 0 toe?

Completely different car but when my Octavia blew a seal on the N/S hydraulics it was absolutely peeing out power steering fluid yet drove completely fine. Probably doesn't help in the slightest :o

Chris - the tracking has been done on a laser machine as well, so the method can't be at fault.

Upon doing some further diagnosing, we've noticed that both front tyres have bald inner edges, so its being taken back to the garage where it was "fixed" tomorrow for them to fit the correct lower arms - we think they're the wrong ones (they're pattern parts anyway), which would give it too much negative camber - its knackered both tyres, so they'll need to be replaced as well
