Steering wheel advice

I'm thinking of getting a steering wheel for my PS3, but before I take the plunge I wanted to know it's worth while with one that sits on your lap.

I play games for 2/3 hours a week, so I won't be looking to spend a fortune, but I would want something worth having. Any advice?

Basically I'm asking it's worth having a wheel just for using on your lap, and if so, which one? There's no way I'd get a stand/workbench for it, don't think I'd get my play value from it, or that my wife would be too impressed.

I would think the driving force GT would be all you need, i got one last year for around £70 its a pretty good wheel and the one they use in the GT5 demo kiosks.

I have a driving force pro which is similar to the GT and I couldn't imagine using it on my lap as it would just be to uncomfortable. Maybe it would be better if you could get some sort of lap attachment, but I don't know if they exist.

I don't have the Driving Force wheel, I've got the wireless MS one for my 360 but it's next to useless on your lap. I made a wooden thing for it that I put behind the sofa when I'm not using it. Honestly no real point otherwise.

I have had the Driving Force Pro and now have the Driving Force GT (which is a big improvement btw). I would say using either on your lap is impossible. If you're serious about using a wheel, it must be on a desk or solid mount of some kind, otherwise you'll get very frustrated and won't enjoy it as you should.

Thanks all, pretty much answered my question: Not worth it if on your lap. Pad it is then:p

Many thanks!

You can get those steering wheel stands where you sit on them, and your own body weight keeps it in place and you can mount the wheel on this.

They're ok, I've got one. Its handy when you want to use a steering wheel in your living room and then pack it all away when you've had your driving fix..!!

I have a logitech Force GT and this is fine for most games. It has decent pedals and works on PC as well. Its not too badly priced, and the steering wheel seat you'll get the package for aroud £140. With GT5 meant to be released in Nov - well be a perfect combo...

Just a warning - the steering wheel seat can handle some force but if you yank the wheel left or right too hard it will move.. but it'll get you going.

Actually might be a good time to mention this -

Its a lap stand for a steering wheel but it clamps the pedals down to the floor and you put the wheel over your lap..

Its meant to work, you can get them on ebay, but no idea if the guy ships overseas..

I was at one time considering one. I'm still thinking about getting one, it seems a rather simple and quite effective idea.

I use this handsome piece of bespoke handbuilt furniture:

That little table might wobble a bit but would probably be fine to be honest. As long as you can get your legs through the middle comfortably.

Nice:D

Right then, you've swayed me back to getting one now. Just got to wait for a nice one to come up on offer now.

That man enough? We've got one of those stashed out in the garage...

Thats what I use which works fine as my pedals fit in between the legs as well :D

Not had any issues with it taking the FFB or my *ahem* brute strength but you will find it my be a little front heavy and will easily topple over if you knock it, this isn't an issue at all when playing :)

Right, have been looking around tonight for a few prices of the Logitech Driving Force GT (Best so far-£80), but I have noticed a lot of sites saying it's discontinued.

Is there a replacement on the horizon for when GT 5 lands (as they are the "official" wheel)?

Nah, the driving force pro (its predecessor) has been discontinued, the driving force GT is still very much in production. It's the wheel that was designed for GT5, so i doubt they'd discontinue it before the game's even released :p

On the wheel-stand front, I use a cheap, crappy fold up table and it's perfect for the job.
