Well they promised free energy, remember a thread in SC talking about it months ago. So where is this free energy? Granted my knowledge of magnetic fields isnt all that but surely if they were right it will be all over the media? Yet if they really are crackpots, why bother?

Probably because they don't want other people to use their idea until they can prove it and the market it.

I think you meant to say probably because the device doesn't do what it says it does, and the whole thing was a PR stunt.

If it's original research they have nothing to worry about. They can patent it...

Publishing a scientific paper on the device doesn't recind any of their intellectual property rights.
