He's moaning the about the costs of petrol.

Currently the car is drinking £20 of petrol and doing less than 120 miles.

That's 25mpg, sounds a bit low for a new mondeo v6??

What you think could be wrong??

depends on his style of driving and whether its motorway/city etc.

from a V6 that looks about right though. what does the manual say it should be doing?

Sounds about right. What kind of driving is he doing mainly? Town, motorway, mixture?

How new is it? Manual or Auto.

Both the 2.5 V6 Auto and the 3.0 V6 Manual which are in the post 2003 cars give 27mpg on the government combined cycle, so 25mpg is probably normal.

If he wants something more economical I highly reccomend the 2.2 TDCi - mine does 47mpg even when driven hard.

Stepdad was simply confused as his older car (also a mondeo 2.0) does double the miles for the same money.

This car was given to him as a present from his former employers as recently he's just retired.

His driving is mainly motorway driving, normally to the airport carpark and back home.

That sounds about right for a V6 Mondeo.

I tend to average about 25mpg, with 20-22 from spirited driving, and 30 or so on longer trips at cruising speed.

You say his last car was "also" a 2.0 Mondeo.... but there is no way his current one can be a 2.0 Mondeo, it will be 2.5 or more likely in the newer models a 3.0.

The V6 is quite a lot thirstier than the 2.0, and that's the change I've made and I'd say I'm using about 30 to 40% more fuel.

Sounds roughly ok to me also.

Depending on how I drive, for £20 worth, I could get 120miles+ easily, if, however I drive like I stole it, I can get less than half that!

But the 2.0L mondeo is a different engine entirely, the V6 is a 2.5L engine.

25mpg is about right for urban use, though a friend's V6 Ghia used to get very high 30's on long motorway trips if he took it easy.

For the current shape Mondeo:

Engine Urban/Extra Urban/Combined:
1.8 25.7/50.5/37.2
1.8 SCi 25.2/48.7/36.2
2.0 25.2/48.7/36.2
2.5 V6 18.8/37.7/27.7
3.0 V6 18.7/37.7/27.4
3.0 V6 ST220 19.5/35.3/27.2

2.0 TDCi (89bhp) -/-/48.7
2.0 TDCi (113bhp) 36.7/61.4/48.9
2.0 TDCi (128bhp) 34.9/58.9/47.1
2.2 TDCi (153bhp) 34.5/57.7/46.3
