Stepping back into pc building after a few years away.

Evening folks and a Merry Christmas,
I was a member of this forum many moons ago, about 15 years to be more specific. Back then I had no kids and loads of disposable income to blow on a gaming rig. That same rig is still running as the family desktop for school homework and the occasional linked oculus gaming session when my son’s laptop can’t cope. It’s served us well having only need ping a new gpu and psu in those years.

I’ve been much more of a casual gamer having played only a handful of times in the past year and want to change that going forward.

To my point and thanks to those that have stuck with me so far. My master plan is to replace the household desktop with something better and clean up/upgrade the old one if at all possible to give to my son in his room.
Realistically, I think I'll struggle to get approval for anything over £1-1.5k past the domestic banker as its a fun thing rather an essential upgrade. The new houshold Desktop doens't need to be a powerhouse (Luckily with the budget!) Games I play are mostly RTS, but I know I'll be on GTA6 when it comes out so need something that will let me run that half decent rather than on ultra high settings. Is it still better to build your own system or is there anything available pre built from the usual suspects that may be worth a look at?

Anything I can do with the current system that I'll give to my son, working within any remaining money left over from the new Desktop?

Thank you for all your responses. It certainly gave me food for thought as I would absolutely class myself as a casual gamer presently, so is it really worth me building a whole new system just to play the occasional game at present?
Instead we’ve gone a different route, I’ll chuck a 3060 Ti into the existing system, it’s got a decent 750w psu so should be more than happy to cope with the extra draw. I’ve wiped the 2TB hdd to install the games and installed a 150GB ssd onto which I’ve installed the OS and av. sons happy as Larry as he’s now running a system quick enough to do his oculus and Fortnite on. I’ve nicked his msi gaming laptop for my occasional gaming (mainly they are billions at present!) and I’m having a look at consoles for gta6, more than likely an XBox so we can do some cross platform gaming.
