Stepping up from my iPhone - Nikon D3300 vs Canon 1300D

Hi guys,

I enjoy photography as a hobby and use my iPhone 6 for all photographs I currently take. This works reasonably well for my needs however I find the lighting has to be absolutely perfect (usually by being outside) to take a good photo and in low light like most phone cameras it all falls down

I'm going travelling and would like to be able to capture some good shots on a proper camera. My set budget is £300 and it seems that at around that price mark the Nikon D3300 and the Canon 1300d (T6) are the standouts.

Here is where I've become unstuck. The reviews for both are good. As the Nikon has been out. A few years there's far more reviews as opposed to the Canon. The one bonus for the Canon is that it has built in wifi but that's not a deal breaker as you can pick up a wifi module for the Nikon.

Any help? Or any other suggestions? I enjoy taking photographs of detailed architecture i.e building or interior designs as well as food!

Hi thanks for your reply and that is a very valid point you've raised. It's something I've been thinking about since I made the initial post. I don't want to end up buying a big camera, finding it cumbersome and then demoting it to gather dust in my draw as I've witnessed a number of friends doing. After the initial excitement it dawns on them that it's not practical to just carry around.

So I'm also considering the Sony A5000? It seems to have positive reviews aside from a subpar lcd screen. The A5100 is superior but it's £200 more than the A5100 and unsure whether that's justified?

Thanks for you advice guys - the DSLR would have been a bad idea for my personal requirements. I want something portable enough to carry with me most of the time but also something that gives me the option of exploring different lenses.

I'm going with the A5000. It seems to fit the bill, it'd be a good step up from my iPhone 6 and it also has wifi/nfc built in.

The A5100 and A6000 are double the price of the A5000 and I don't reckon (from my admittedly limited knowledge) I'll be getting double the camera.

Jessops online has it for 250. I would have preferred rainforest but they have a dispatch time of 1-3 months!
