stepping

what is it ?
Hi,

a stepping (or code) is just a way the processor manufacturers can label a certain batch of silicon (so its really just part of an *inventory* system). Each time they make an adjustment to the manufacturing process or add some slight features they adjust the stepping (or give that batch a new name/code).

The wafers of silicon are then converted into processors and sent for testing, after they pass all tests they are marked/graded at a certain speed and sold.

Every now and then a batch of processors produced from the most uber silicon wafers make it into lower end (cheap) products, and in the hands of an overclocker it becomes gold! If one of these chips can overclock mega, there is a good chance that the rest can too, so if we want one we track the product using the stepping or manufacturing code.
