Stepson’s AM4 rig is starting to show its age after 6 years. He’s not got a lot of cash and will need to stay on AM4 for now. His current rig is:

MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
3700X 4.4GHz
32GB Corsair Vengeance C16 3200MHz
Corsair H100 Platinum AIO
Gigabyte RX5700XT Gaming OC 8GB
AOC CQ32G1 144Hz VA Monitor
Corsair 220T Airflow Mid Tower
His main game is F1 and he is noticing each year that his rug is struggling to play on max settings.

He’s gaming at 1440p and sometimes makes YouTube videos with commentary on his races.

Is the standard AM4 mid life upgrade programme going to work for him? E.g 5700X3D and a better GPU? I’d say he has about £700 as a max budget. My main concern is whether his board is good enough to take a CPU upgrade or not - any thoughts?

He may also need a bigger case to take a longer card….

Even now after so many years
Am4 is still a great platform for people
Who don't need the latest and greatest hardware
For me am4 has to be probably the best sockets ever
Still using a 5950x and crosshair viii extreme here

As the guys already said
A cpu upgrade there's plenty to choose from
Just update bios first if it isn't already
Up to date
And a 9070 make for a relatively cheap upgrade
9070 xt if they want to stretch the budget maybe

It's incredible how AM4 can still deliver a platform worthy of housing higher end GPU's, for context AM4 launched in September of 2016 and is going on a decade!

OP: Your stepson will be very happy I'm sure, that's some massive uplift for him.

Thanks guys - assume his Corsair RM850 PSU will cover the 9070 too?
Yup.

My 750W happily runs my 5700X and 9070 so a Corsair 850 will be fine.

E: I'm on B450 Mortar Max FWIW. As has been mentioned just update the bios beforehand.

Not only that
Top end Am4 boards like my crosshair viii extreme
You even get 2 x usb4 and thunderbolt
5 x m2 and a load of stuff some am5 boards don't
Even have
That's why I just don't feel upgrading to am5
Is necessary this am4 board
Will keep me going another few years no problem

I'm on a B450/5800X3D right now and honestly don't see a point of upgrading for at least a couple of generations, hell even the 5090 shows little performance loss on PCI-E 3.0 vs 5.0 and with GPU uplift stagnation I'll not be buying anything on that level anytime soon.

If I can buy a reasonably priced 5090 level card in 3 years I'm good to go tbh, if that's not possible I'll put my money into other hobbies and catch up on my already hefty Steam backlog.

MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
that is a solid board

100% do what this man said
5700x3d and a 9070 GPU should do him well and selling his old stuff would offset cost.

Motherboard is fine, his case supports upto 300mm gpus

280mm 9070.

right now i have the same ish set up and i game at 1440p 165fps, and this set up as not problem putting out 120 to 165fps at native 1440p no need for FSR
(in the games i play)**
