Stick with a 1070 or upgrade?

Current specs are:
i5 2500k @ 4.6Ghz
8GB RAM
EVGA 1070

I use the rig strictly for gaming with an ultrawide monitor at 3440x1440p 100Hz. Going to be upgrading the rig to an 8700k and 16GB RAM. Currently not using the rig much apart from Siege and Rocket league, also with RDR2 and BOPS4 out I probably wont be playing my PC much.

Since i'm upgrading the rig and currently have the money to spend, is it worth buying a 1080ti/2080? Do you guys think the 1080 Ti will drop 6 months from now, when i'll be PC gaming more?

Not fussed about maxing settings out on games, I will drop settings to maintain a 100Hz refresh rate.

Thanks for the help in advance.

1080ti card prices probably won't go any lower and they are apparently near to selling out so if you want to go that way, i'd grab one while you can.

Was going to ask if you had seen any suggestion that RDR2 will be on PC as well but then re-read that line and presume you mean you'll be playing those on console! if you are not in any rush now it may be worth waiting to see what price the 2070 or 2080 reaches once they have been out a bit longer.

Yeah really in no rush for the GPU, CPU is lagging behind so will be upgrading that during the Black Friday sales.

Could wait for price dips on the 2080, 1070 is serving me okay for the current games I'm playing (extra FPS + settings would be nice though but not a deal breaker)

Hate having options, makes me too indecisive :D

Stick with your build, drop a setting or too. There’s nothing wrong with it.
If you MUST upgrade something, then grap a used i7 2700k

Tbh seige and rocket league are not taxing games. I would just keep your 1070 as both of those games can be maxed with a 1070. I play both games at 4k no problem on my Vega 64. 7nm cards should be around next year and i would say thats the time to jump to a new card if you feel the need. You will probably see a decent jump in fps just from the new system any how so it's a little like getting a faster gpu.

Only reason I wanted to upgrade is because I currently have the funds to do it and looking at future game releases only the following are on my list (which I know my 1070 will struggle with):
- BFV
- Division 2
- Gears & Halo
- Cyberpunk

As none of those are anytime soon I guess I could just wait and see GPU prices ~march time ..

The 1070 won’t struggle on any of those, well Cyberpunk it will, but that’s not likley to hit until late next at the earliest, by then 7mn GPU’s are likely to be here and you will get more for your money.

Your money, but the 1070 will see you just fine, like I said before, just get an i7 to scratch your upgrade itch, maybe treat your self to an new 250gb SSD too for some favourite games, you will see a good increase on BFV multiplayer by going to an i7 btw

Was in similar position . upgraded from a 1070 to a 2080 . currently running a 2560x1080 166hz panel . most games at this res with my chip run beautifully maxed out around 100-120fps avg ( foza horizen , black ops 4 etc . ) battlefield1 or anything with a heavyier CPU util I avg 80-90fps maxed out but its butter smooth. 2080/1080ti more then able to do 100hz refresh rates in games at ur res providing your a lot less aggressive with AA then I am at a lower res

Upgrade

The 1070 is basically a 980ti...I bought one ran at the op res and returned it fir a 1080.

Now I’d only game at 3440x 1440 with a 1080ti...

Why have a cool super wide monitor and not the grunt to run it

I run a 1070 at 2560x1440 and that is about as high as I'd want to go with it - in combination with G-Sync its very playable at decent quality levels in games but if it wasn't for G-Sync I'd have upgraded by now.

Exactly the same in my case. G-Sync has extended the life of this card, certainly not thinking about upgrading right now, especially with the latest underwhelming yet eyewateringly expensive card releases. Just not enough benefit to be had for the outlay.

Make that three of us. I'm finding that my 1070 with G-Sync is still a good combination, I have no plans on upgrading yet.

As far as the OP's question goes, my advice would be stick with your 1070 for now. It sounds like it's doing the job, and it's just an upgrade itch / money burning a hole. Having said that, the 1070 may have more resale value now that it will in 6+ months time, so an alternative option would be to sell the 1070 now if you're not playing games at the moment, then look for a new card when you do want to start gaming again.

Of course, in 6 months time the UK will probably be out of the EU, with or without a deal. That may well have a significant effect on the value of the £, and therefore hardware prices may increase or even decrease. That's very hard to predict, so I'd just stick to what you know now.

I'm also running a 1070 with a 1440p G-Sync monitor. I was planning to get a 1080Ti as I didn't think it would have enough grunt. Turns out it plays games just fine so I bought an XBox One X instead and actually prefer gaming on it to my PC. The OLED and B&W 5.1 can't be beaten!

The new 20 series don't interest me performance wise, so I upgraded from a 1070 to a second hand 1080Ti with warranty.

Probably the first time I have purchased 2 x GPU's from the same generation.

I game at 2560 x 1440 @60hz, so this GPU will now see me through to Nvidia's next gen.

To be honest, I have no interest in going to a higher resolution at the moment, so this GPU will do me fine for the foreseeable future.

For your dilemma, if your are buying new, you might as well get the 2080.
