Stick with XL2420T or change to a 27"?

Hi,

I've recently bought 2 x XL2420Ts and a 3D Vision 2 kit as part of an upgrade to eventually have 3 of these monitors in a surround setup. At the moment, I'm using them with my Dell U2410.

I'm now wondering whether I've made the wrong decision because while Eyefinity can look impressive, it seems to be so fiddly having to patch games and make constant adjustments to get things working. Also the stretched side screens seem odd, I know it's supposed to be a perception thing, but I ultimately wanted to end up with 3 x 3D which seems pointless if looking at the side screens shows stretched images. The missing text and menu problems in games is also frustrating.

The other problem is they take up my entire desk because of the size of the stands and depths of the monitors. I know I could help this by getting a triple monitor stand, but with the XFX one being £300 it would mean that the total cost for the monitors would be getting near to £1200 and I could get a 27" screen and a GTX 680 (which is my next upgrade) for that.

I think I've got three options....

1. Keep the BenQs, get a third one, stick with Eyefinity and hope things get better.
2. Keep just one of the BenQs and use this on its own for 120Hz and 3D and put the rest of the money towards a graphics card upgrade.
3. Change both BenQs for one 27" monitor, preferably the Asus VG278H which would work out cheaper than the two BenQs and the 3D Vision 2 kit cost.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what they'd do? I like the idea of having a bigger screen as I've had 24" for a while with the U2410, but would like 120Hz and 3D and would like to have a 3D Vision 2 monitor because my next upgrade will be changing my 5870 to a GTX 680.

I sit about 2.5 to 3 feet away from the screen if it makes a difference with a 27" 1080p screen.

Also, does anyone know why the 27" 3D Vision 2 monitors have disappeared from OcUK? I know the VG278H had a backlight problem, but I would've thought that would be fixed now....

Thanks! :)

I have just changed my old 3D Vision Surround setup using Acer monitors to the Benq XL2420T monitors, the difference is big.
I would get another Benq monitor and go 3D Vision Surround.
AMD drivers I have read still have problems with surround 3D, the NVidia version just works and the new driver are great.
There are cheaper stands around, think I paid about £100, but it was a while ago.. have a google.
I was in the same boat as you a couple of weeks ago was thinking of changing to a 27", while I was selling my old monitors I had you use one 24" for 3D gaming, it was OK but having got the 3D Vision Surround setup again, I know I made the right choice, i couldn't go back to single screen gaming....

Thanks for your suggestions. There does seem to be quite mixed feelings about Eyefinity setups.

At first, I thought it was going to be an easy decision as I wasn't sure I liked it, but I'm starting to change my mind because it really does feel immersive in games. However, the menu problems and stretched images in some games can be annoying and just when I thought I'd found a solution with the 'widescreenfixer' program, I read about how it can be detected as something to get around the anti-cheating systems on games and in Steam and that you can get banned, so it's not really a solution that I want to risk.

With regards to the negative things I've read about 27" 1920 x 1080 monitors and the blocky text, I tried my PC on our Pioneer Kuro 50" TV using HDMI and the text still looks fairly sharp. If I look very closely for it, I can make out pixels, but looking at the screen from 2-3 feet away seemed fine and it's almost twice the size of a 27" monitor.

Am I missing something? Would there be a difference between a 1080p plasma TV and a 27" 1080p LCD / LED monitor or am I just one of those people who don't really notice blocky text like others?
