I sold my 4870x2 to my mate because it was faulty he got warranty on it an i got 150 quid for it. I got 4890. Oblivion still has massive fps dips with everything maxed out, goes into the 45s a lot of the time in battles and such. call of duty waw maxed out also dips into the 50s when reviews i seen suggest it should stay above 60fps. This sucks. My harddrive is slower than my mates for some reason, my takes a while to load call of duty 5 were as my mates is in a few seconds and my hdd is bigger with more cache.

sounds like maybe your HDD is full of junk, the best solution is to do a reformat and reinstall windows, this will significantly boost your boot times etc, it could also explain the drops in fps if theres stuff that windows is trying to run in the background

With regards to CoD5, ATI cards have an issue with map load times which has been widely documented but neither ATI or Treyarch have done anything about it.

I have ATI and COD5 and no issues, also his mate is using the x2 which is ATI and has no issues, also res should not matter with either of those cards, both able to handle anything you throw at them. You could try defragging using something liek auslogics tool, other than that is it an old HDD?

I have tried defrags loads times in past and its not made difference. So obviously something in my system is the problem for crap peformance so means im gonna ave to spend more money i bought this system about 7 months ago and its been crap from the start. Sometimes wish i just stuck with the ps3. Not sure how old my hdd is its a seagate barracuda 500gb 32mb cache hdd.

Gonna try windows 7, downloading it now. Hope i dont get into trouble for this, but i have an illegal copy of windows, i intend to buy windows 7 though. Would an illegal copy cause poor peformance?

A few things to check,

Some hard disk need to be setup to enable SATA II mode.

Have you got the latest drivers for the mobo and GFX card.

Have you got the latest patches for the games ?

Imo 45fps isn't crap performance, still perfectly playable at that. However, I understand that it should perhaps be higher, try uninstalling your drivers completely and reinstalling them.

The illegal version of Windows may have an effect, who knows what stuff it running behind the scenes on it.

Ive played cod5 since day one and never heard of this issue BUT now u mention it it kinda makes sence, ive noticed slow load times for quite a while even buying more ram and defragging my HDD a lot more than usual, im even debating buying a SSD to speed up load times

now youve posted that im wondering if its my ATI 4850 thats caused the issues

have you got any links/sources for this documented issue please ? :)

fine over here, and I have ATI cards althrough i had a odd one on that game, seemed to be missing water texture

Just google the issue, there's loads of reports on it and some youtube vids. I've also seen a massive increase in load times going from a GTX280 to a 4870x2

loads? we must have very different definitions of loads, theres a few, but a very small minority when you think how many ppl must have this game and ATI cards, I suspect its more down to their set ups than an ATI issue as in each instance theres as many ppl saying they dont have issues as there are with issues

I have done everything new drivers latest gigabyte drivers for my board tried different bios's how do i test to see if my hdd is in sata 2 mode?

Its very similar to my 4870x2 when i look at walls and stuff fps go really high but when i look at people or action it goes very low in fps? what else could cause this a bad motherboad socket?

I have tried it on windows 7 and it is the same oblivion dipping to 38fps lowest this is ridiculous.

I just ran furmark is this a low score. 3471?

Is your PCIe link width defintiely running at x16?

As opposed to x4 or x1 or anything. You can check in CPUZ. One of the slots on my mobo switched to x1 for no good reason.
