I have decided to upgrade my ram. I have 2gb ddr2 1066 (2x1gb)
I would like to upgrade to 4.
I cant upgrade motherboard because I cant re install windows.
Any recommendations?
Thanks
If you are using a 32bit OS then you will only be able to use 3.4GB of ram any how. So if that is the case I do not see the point of buying more unless you can get the ram dirt cheap. DDR3 is almost cheaper than DDR2 now. I picked up 4 GB set the other day for £27. Try finding 4GB of DDR2 ram for under £50.
There is no reason that it should not. So all good.
But as I said I am not sure that it is a worthwhile upgrade. What gains you might get (and I do not see there being many) will be so slight as to not make any difference. Unless of course you are doing some kind of memory intensive media rendering and in that case the ram would useful.
Personally I would rather put that money aside and do a full upgrade at some later point. As to your OS, yes you can reinstall it. You will have to phone the Microsoft help line and explain to them that your original motherboard was replaced. But since you own the OS you can use it.
Seriously think about why you want or feel you need to increase the total amount of ram.
The reason I cannot install the OS again is because I have only just set it up and I dont have backup drive so would lose all of my data. The 4gb would be used in gaming. Will be also putting a new cpu and graphics card in gradually over the next year. Any more recommendations?
Instead of upgrading that system, just go for a new mobo. pen drives are dirt cheap nowadays, you can backup on there. OR, you can make a new partition on your hard drive, install windows on there with the new mobo, then copy your data across, and then lose the partition.
Problem solved, so long as you have around 10gb HD space free
