I sold my GTX580 on eBay just before the launch of the 780, along with selling an old Kindle and some other bits I stashed about 550 quid in savings. Due to real life I still haven’t bought another card yet, but I really, really want to play Rome 2 and catch up on some other titles I've missed. With the imminent release of the new AMD cards I just don't know what to do. Also, I see 4GB 770s are out now.

I've been thinking:

- Buy a 4GB 770 now. SLI it early next year, or when Battlefield comes out if I can't hack it. I have the PSU to deal with this already.
- Just buy a 780 now and sod it.
- Wait and evaluate the AMD cards.
- Wait until the AMD cards come out and then go for one of the first two options but save some cash? Will the prices be pushed down a bit?

I was kind of hoping to pick up a 27" 120hrtz monitor too, so if I can save some cash on the card then this becomes more feasible.

Any advice, points of view would be appreciated.

Just recently bit the bullet and got a 780 myself, not even annoyed that I didn't wait for the AMD 9xxx series. AMD never match nvidia or usually even come close but some argue they are better bang for buck so if money is not an issue i would go for 780 but if it is maybe it would be sensible to wait.

Could your PSU handle 2 x 780s if that where an option in the future? If you think like that you are future proofed for a few years

What CPU you got at the moment?

There are lots of game you could well be having enough graphic grunt for flying above 120fps, but the CPU cannot maintain high enough minimum frame rate (i.e. Even overclocked i5 would get dips down to 70fps in some games; worse if on AMD CPU).

grab an after market cooler and get that to around 4.3ghz, I could be wrong but I think with this bump you shouldn't bottleneck a 780 if the game is correctly optimized

I do have a pretty decent CPU cooler, just a mild fear of overclocking. Do you think I could get to 4.3gh on a Asrock Z68 Extreme4? What sort of temps are acceptable? Appreciate this is a tangent.

What is the exact cooler? Looks like a nice enough board, although in general I don't imagine the board would be a concern, grab CPU-Z / Core Temp and display your temps in taskbar / On screen display if you can. Set a limit of say 80c and it can issue you with a warning or even sleep the computer stopping whatever application was causing the temps (as it will only reach this temp under load).

Hopefully someone with a 2600k can advise you on voltage requirements if any for a clock like this. I missed that generation as I was a poor student nub but I recall Sandybridge k chips are regarded as some of the nicest clockers around ;)

Managed to nab a 780 at £372 so for me it was a bit of a no brainer. It was used so a bit of a risk, but it paid off. I have a slight Nvidia preference on the quiet as well anyways (when the price is right).

The baseline EVGA 780 is only 500 quid now, i had it in mind that it was more expensive... I just have this weird neurosis about the VRAM. If these new 770s have 4GB, it makes me feel like i'm missing out (and i've always wanted to do a play through of a highly, highly modded Syrim).

Argh.

There's not much reason to buy a 770 with the current price on 7970s. If you can afford it upfront, 2x7950s makes the most sense.
