Still rocking a Radeon VII. Am I the only one?

In hindsight I probably should have sold this when they were going for £1k on eaby. But I'm still running a Radeon VII. I don't play many games but it still works fine for me. Am I the last bastion of the Radeon VII on OcUK or is anyone else still running one?

P.S. It may not be competitive anymore but visually it still looks one of the best GPU's ever.

Sold mine in '21 when they were going for stupid money.

I'll always stand up for the VII. It was a very decent card (I experienced very few issues), I found it performed on par with a 2080 generally (better as you scaled up in resolution/IQ). For what it was, it was actually reasonably priced if you got one at launch. Aesthetically, it was fantastic.
 
Vii was a nice looking card....but the cooler performance was utter keek. With a triple fan setup you'd expect it to be reasonably quiet but it was anything but that. Brought back memories of the 7990, which was touted by the press and AMD as being quiet, yet the retail versions were for the most part like vacuum cleaners.

They did pretty well making it work at all given it was a 375w dual 7970 chip monster of a card!

:edit: Loooool just went back and saw the 6990 was a dual chip (6970) 450w abomination :cry:

:edit2: crikey, and they went on to make the impossibly ridiculous 500w 295x2 :eek:

Here endeth my amd gpu tdp rabbit hole, for now.

The 7990 was meant to be built using cherry picked low voltage cores, and apparently cards with those ran pretty quiet. But it seems like they ran out of those cores and just started using whatever cores they had to hand and the cooler wasn't able to handle them. Mine routinely hit 95c and up. But amds promo material talks about how it's a quiet card based on the low voltage gpus (that seem to have mainly been sent to reviewers).

The 6990 was said to be built using a phase change thermal material that decreased temps by around 10c or so. But it was always noisy

At least the 295x2 was liquid cooled, the best of the lot

Inefficient architecture that needed bandwidth as a bandaid solution same as 3d vcache for the cpus. As tech moves on newer cards getting better performance from lower bandwidth vram simply due to more efficient use of the bandwidth AMD however didn't learn. Look at Nvidia, cut the vram capacity down and drop the bus width down along with jacking up the price ... Now that's how you do business

Pish, HBM was what gave it a wider bandwidth.
