Hi there.

I posted a couple of weeks ago aboutmy diesel which smokes like a London bus when I put my foot down.

As suggested I've used that stuff you add to the fuel tank. Twice. It's not made any difference.

I looked at the air filter. It was a little dusty, but not terrible.

I have an extended warranty. is this something I can get them to look at under this warranty? The warranty ends in September so I might as well if it's covered, no?

Thanks

James

Audi?

All Diesels smoke - some are cleaner than others though.

I presume it goes ok? Doesn't feel flat?

his is an Audi. Mine isn't though.

Feels fine. Just a bit embarrassing that when I put my foot down, I leave a trail behind me like the Roadrunner

If we could see it - we could tell you whether it's normal or not.

Best bet really is to get someone who knows the vehicle to follow you and give you an informed opinion. Providing he can actually see you through the clouds of soot that is... :D

Personally I'd take it to a Mitsi dealer and get one of their engineers to follow you.

Thanks. Is it something that would be covered under the warranty?

Didn't you say it had been chipped?

In which case, no it isn't, as the chipping is probably a big contribution.

Oh. I don't really even know what that means (the chipping). The warranty is newer than the "chip" so therefore, to me, Mitsubishi are warrantying the chip also?

I presume the chip was not done by, or approved by Mitsubishi?

No idea.

The chip was done before September 2005, which is the date of the Warranty. Does that not imply they are warrantying (? I've invented a new word) it?

It's really highly unlikely Mitsubishi chipped it. Also highly unlikely it was chipped by a company they approve of. Also unlikely Mitsubishi like the boost of their TD's turning up.

So, no, no chance they will pay for sorting out excessive smoke when the likely cause is an aftermarket chip that's bugger all to do with them - messing with the cars boost level.

Why on earth would they honour a warranty claim in such circumstances?

It's not their problem. They'll simply say get the chip reversed out and it'll stop smoking.

Oh. Bum.

Thanks for all the replies and help.

Depends what type it is. But for your truck your looking at what £11 for a new one!?

You could get a pre oiled one (as opposed to the paper elements) and use that. Whilst it probably wont aid smoking it will last a lot longer and can be cleaned

I asked in Halfords and they wanted £35.
I aslo asked in my local car shop thing, and they wanted £8.
How can there such a difference?
