Still trying to choose...

Guys, I know I am a pain, but I am still trying to choose the right upgrade!

Anyway, having looked at the recent news about the 9800 range, I am not prepared to wait for it, as it doesn't seem worth it.

As such, I have now decided that it has got to be one of 2 things...

1 - 2x BFG 8800GTS 512 in SLi. Rest of spec as is

2 - 1x HIS 3870x2 1024. Also replace motherboard with X38 (to allow for possible CrossfireX in a month or so)

So, what would be best? I like gaming using AA/AF at 1680x1050, so that has to be a big consideration. Otherwise, I have no great preference as to what path I choose, be it ATi or nVidia, as I have had cards from both in the past.

I am leaning a little towards the 3870x2 and new motherboard, as I feel the IN9 I have is holding back my Q6600 a bit. I think it has more to give, but perhaps its just not worth the extra expense of the new board.

One slight worry I have about the ATi card is noise. I hate system noise, and can only just about put up with my current GTS 640 at 75-80%.

Any of those two solutions would handle that resolution quite nicely except Crysis as you might know. Depends on the games you are planning to play though. From what i know Crossfire scales better then SLI.
I would say go for the one that is cheaper since both solutions shall do the job just nicely.

Cheers, I appreciate your input. The difference in cost would be very little, anything between £20-50, depending on the brand of ATi card bought.

I know about Crysis, and to be honest, that doesn't really bother me. I am not going to go out of my way and spend a fortune just to get one game to play well. It can sit in it's box until I feel the urge to play it.

I guess I just need to decide if I want to upgrade now and leave room for a good boost by adding another 3870x2, or have to rip everything out when I need another boost. That may be the deciding factor. Adding another 3870x2 in a month or 2 when drivers improve could be a very nice upgrade.

Hmmm, another thought...if I go for the 3870x2, would my Tagan TG480-U01 be up to the task? Might save me having to get a new PSU.

Yeah, quite possibly, but would be nice to have plenty of headroom. I may change the screen later this year, but that would mean a new desk, and I might just be pushing my luck there! :D
