Hello there.

I am currently at University studying Music Technology and I am very interested in getting a MacBook Pro but I can't seem to justify spending that much money on one...

If I order a MacBook Pro via University I get a discount which will bring a 15" down to around £1500.00. In fact, the only real reason why I want a MacBook is because the software I want to use, Logic Pro 8, is only useable on Macs. Plus all we use at University are Macs too.

I currently have my own custom built PC which is around one and a half years old and cost me less than a MacBook Pro does now, and it consists of the following components:

Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.80GHz clocked @ 3.00GHz
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10000RPM SATA 16MB
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2
OcUK GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB GDDR3
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler
Lian-Li PC-7A PLUS II Aluminium Midi-Tower Case
Windows XP SP3

I was given some money for Christmas to put towards a MacBook Pro but do you think it will be more cost effective and beneficial to spend that money on upgrading the above rig? I only really use it for making music on anyway. Maybe I could find a way of being able to use Logic Pro 8 on a PC somehow?

I really do like the look of the MacBooks though. I guess I'm just looking for some advice really before I go ahead and part with my cash then in two months time I realise I made a mistake! :D

Thanks for the help!

Go for a MacBook instead, perhaps? Or an iMac? If you really want to use Logic your only real option is to move to a Mac, but that's quite a powerful PC you'd be moving from.

i was in the same situation a year ago.. just started a music technology course, everything is on apple, and i wanted to buy logic 8 (which is real cheap with student discount)

I decided to just buy of ebay, theres plenty of second and and new-old stock on there. i ended up getting an 17" macbookpro for only £1250 (compared to £1700ish of the apple site). It was new, never opened. just old stock. that had 2gigs less ram and a slightly smaller hard drive than the current model at that time.

Yeah I added Logic Pro 8, 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and a 320GB Serial ATA @ 7200 hard drive.

Is there any 'easy' way of going about getting a Mac operating system like OSX onto a PC? so I can use Logic Pro 8 without having to fork out loads of money to get a Mac just so I can use Logic on it...

Thanks!

Yep - but how easy it is depends on what components you're running.

You're not allowed to discuss it on OcUK given it breaks the OS X license agreement (srs bsns)
