Stock E6600 Vs E8400

I'd say at stock you'd get a decent boost!

An extra 340mhz and the extra 1mb of cache per core. You'd probably need to run an e6600 @ 3.2ghz to match it.

Then of course there's the reduced temperature due to the lower running voltage.

Compared to my old e6600 the e8500 has been an absolute pleasure to run. At stock i'd say it matched my e6600 at 3.4ghz and my e2160 @ 3.6ghz.

Temps of my e2160 @ 3.6 were around 70c on watercooling whereas the e8500 @ 4ghz is 46c.

Thanks gt_junkie

Did you notice much improvement on video encoding as i think i'd rather a Dualcore over a Quad for the fact the new E8xxx run cooler as you have mentioned.

i went from an e6600 to an e8400, of course benchmarks will show some difference, but in real world apps i didn't notice any difference at all. Especially not over £100 worth.

But thats just my opinion ;)

A little - but as Sgt_Pepper says probably not enough for that kind of outlay.

Now, if it's more of a heat/power related issue then that's a different matter as the wolfdales do run very cool.

Anybody upgraded from a E6600 to a E8400 ?

Ifso did you notice much difference at stock settings as i don't overclock.

Thanks
i went from e6600 to e8400, i notice a bit of improvement at the same clock speed i had on the e6600 (3.6) with 1.58v!!! temps where way high to 35 idle 55+ load.. and thats with watercooling.
moved to e8400 running at 4.2 temps 24 idle 42 load with 1.4v, and thats with s/b n/b and mosfets watercooled..
So at stock clocks i don't think you will notice a great deal if any apart from temps..

math

save your money and overclock the e6600 to 3.0ghz easly for e6600 to do..

Exactly. The same performance (and more) could be had very easily with maybe an hour's tweaking and then a few more hours of stability testing.

Upgrading a stock speed E6600 to a stock speed E8400 would be a colossal waste of money.

if he plays games why not upgrade his gx card.. or better ram..

The E8400 at stock gives 17% more F@H points than an E6600 at stock. That's a lot for a chip that uses less power and runs cooler.

Get the E6600 clocked. It should easily hit 3.2-3.4Ghz and if you are lucky even more.

I actually went the other way. I went from a E8500 to my current E6600 after i had "problems" with the E8500. There is not that much of a difference between them and you certainly will be hard pressed to notice any difference in day to day use. The E6600 is still a very good cpu.

I took the jump from an E6600 to the E8400. Yes there was a difference, both at standard and o/c... Top of my head something like 30%-35% encoding divx to Vob speed increase, not only that I crossfire so I needed to feed those bad boys. Now I run my cpu @ 4ghz no problems, it's a peach.. ;)

I keep reading at Google that people are complaining about dodgy temp sensors on the E8400 anybody else know anything as there doesn't seem to be a solution.

I went from an E6600 overclocked to an E8400 overclocked and my experience with my favourite game (IL2 Forgotten Battles) is that I got a massive boost as the game is very CPU intensive. I cannot say there was any difference with other applications.

The difference to me was £65 because I managed to get a good price for my E6600 on ebay.

I've been told that the 965 chipset on my GIGABYTE 965P-DS3P rev 3.3 will hold back any improvements upgrading from a E6600 to a E8400.

Is this true ?

Hmm. I paid £65 for mine on Ebay. It was'nt a OEM SL9ZL was it?

It could be a problem as the 965P chipset was never supposed to be for 45nm cpu's and a lot of board manufacturers released a beta bios to provide varying levels of support. The one 965P board that i know clocks very well with the Wolfdales is the Asus Commando. Not sure about yours though.
