Found out on Friday I have been the victim of identity theft. Some mug's tried to buy an Audi S3 using my name, address and bank details. This happens only 1 week after my credit card got done as well. It must be from the same person(s) doing it.

Anyway, I've cancelled my account as that's what the Bank advised me to do. The credit card was already cancelled last week. So as far as my money is concerned I am hopefully safe. My issue now is, someone is walking around with my name, address and whatever other details they might have.

The Bank said they would just "look in to it". Sussex Police fraud department, won't do anything about it.

I have no idea what else could happen, how it will affect my credit report etc etc.

It seems that there is no advice or help from Police or my Bank. What am I to do, cos I got no idea.

Nothing you can do really, you can only react to what happens, and when this person realises they cant do anything with your detail they will move on to someone else.

Get a copy of your credit report though, and get the stuff this guy has applied ofr removed

Can you find out which Audi dealer it was? maybe try ringing them and find out some more details on the guy, he might have given them a phone number?

If someone is fraudulently tying to use your details for things like loans/hp/credit agreements you can send a letter to the credit reference agencies and get a warning put on your file that someone is trying to use your details (I can't remember the actual name of the warning but it basically means any credit agreement that is made should go through additional ID checks).

I'm not sure where they tried, I got a letter from some finance company accepting agreement of GAP Insurance etc. That's how I found out. Rang them up and they gave me details of what this person had applied for and stuff. The letter looked dodgy enough anyway, so when I rang this company I didn't give nothing away to allow them to get anything. I checked out their website and they look legit so I guess they were sucked in too. They had my name, address, bank account details for this agreement but the driving licence id numbers didn't match.

Anyone ever heard or used First Response Finance Ltd ?

I think you might mean CIFAS Protective Registration Service

As has been said, get a copy of your credit file and contact everyone on there that you don't remember trying to get or getting credit with. It's shocking that your bank isn't being more helpful - I believe that under the FSA or similar, if the company that tried to get the finance for you (in this case the car finance company) is registered then it becomes their responsibility to deal with the situation and carry out investigations and passing anything onto the police that needs to be investigated.

Edit: Might be some useful info here for you

I got something similar - some joker ordered a couple of mobile phones from Grattan despite me not even being a member. I rang their fraud department and they sorted it out.

I had nearly £1400 taken out of my account last week,

It was my debit card details used to buy PC equipment from a competitor

The bank is investigating for me and im getting refunded,

I do have an idea how these details were taken from me, but i better not go into detail until its been sorted out,

Strangely, my bank account money was untouched (prob due to having no money in it) so they obviously just tried to use the account details to get finance.
