Sister had her iPhone 6 stolen from work last week.

Obviously there is a device password and the Apple ID on the handset.

It's my understanding that if they wipe the phone, when it boots up it will prompt for the apple id password before it's usable?

So why do they bother to steal iPhones? Surely there must be underground ways of selling off the phone and for it to be worth while to both the thief and the buyer?

Yes, without the Apple ID its unusable.

Why steal it?!?!Ask any thieving sum. There are many ways to block a stolen phone making them useless but they still get stolen as someone will always buy it.

Q.

If I do a remote wipe on the handset, am I then making it 'usuable' again? I.e does it wipe the apple id off the phone, or do I have to remove the device from her icloud account for the phone to be unattached? (Obviously not desirable)

Far as I know, even if you do a remote wipe. To use the phone, the Apple ID password will still be needed. Won't matter anyway, if it has been reported as stolen.

Change all the accounts passwords (emails/websites) she had access to on that phone, regardless if it is supposed to be secure.

Is the device still online?

Would probably get £100 on eBay for it still. Look at all the lowlifes selling iCloud locked phones.

your sister better change her apple icloud password quick. if doesnt have passlock lock. thief can request icloud password reset token and get sent to her phone. so the thief will have full access to her account.

Pretty sure you have to unlock the phone first before getting the code...
