Stone chip, replacement or repair?

I got a stone chip on my windscreen near the middle, it's around 5cm long. Is that likely to be a replacement over a repair? And does claiming on the glass cover of insurance affect renewal rates?

Sounds like a new windscreen. Apparently chips or cracks smaller than 25mm and not in the direct line of view can be fixed otherwise it’s a new windscreen. I don’t think it ever affected my insurance after claiming for a new windscreen

Thanks, that is unfortunate- I guess it seems like such a small area (relative to the size of the windscreen) so feels like such a waste of glass. I guess if I do a glass claim then they can assess and see if a repair will do, as the excess is a lot less for a repair than a replacement.

I have my renewal coming up so I don't necessarily want to put a claim in just before then, so I'll probably hold out a few weeks. Is there anything I can do to limit the risk of it spreading or is that too risky? I've currently sandwiched it between gaffer tape and it seems to be stable for now (I also don't need to drive often).

5cm.. that's defo a replacement. most car insurance igrone windscreen claims or have their limits set to something really stupid high before it affects your ncd.

I had one that was under 1cm, it had not spread but was more of chip out of it. it was about 10cm from the edge and the "AI" system wanted to replace it and booked me in for a replacement.
When the bloke came to my house, he was like... I speak to my boss about repairing it, it was an ok job; I could still see the mark; if I looked for it. but the car when to the scrappers 2 months afterwards (poor girl) and it was £100 pound saved.

5cm crack will 100% be a replacement.

Most insurers treat glass claims separately from main NCD, so it shouldn't have any effect. Check your policy first, though.
