On topic: It's tragic that this sort of punishment is still acceptable in places like Iran, but it's an even bigger tragedy to me that they don't seem at all motivated to modernise their legal system or to have some form of revolution.

in the middle east yes - here, not so much. I think it should be kept for those with extreme convictions such as murder etc or are repeat offenders of lesser crimes like rape etc (to that level).

Nah, a good public flogging would fit most minor crimes. The number of lashes depends on the crime. Cheap too. A humiliating tattoo on the forehead as an added punishment for repeat offenders, something of an emasculating nature. Then it can't become a status symbol.

Certainly better than what happens to them now.

Under Iran's strict penal code, men convicted of adultery should be buried up to their waists and women up to their chests for stoning. The stones used should not be large enough to kill the person immediately.

Sad thing is that some parts of Iran are reasonably progressive compared with the region as a whole & I'm pretty sure a lot of young Iranians (at least within the urban areas) aren't too keen on this. Its just unfortunate that a bunch of nutty towel heads decided to take control a few decades back.
