A friend has a computer with XP that gives a BSOD at boot whenever a USB drive is connected, it happens with three different drives/sticks
If you disconnect the USB drive booting goes fine.

Has anyone got an idea what it could be?

Does the USB work once Windows has booted? It could be a dodgy driver or a dodgy USB hub.
Yes, works fine if inserted after boot, no bad sectors and no errors after boot.

I have been tinkering with computers for a long time now but I can't figure this one out at all.

No driver updates, it has worked before, virus and malware scanned and I have tried every USB port, even extra front USB 2.0 ports on a integrated card reader.
