Booted up my computer this morning and all looked normal but after about 30 seconds i got a blue screen with the error 'STOP: d0000144 Unknown Hard Error'.

I restarted and received the same problem after a similar time period. I then proceeded to boot into safe mode which seemed to work fine.

I have not installed anything recently and google searches have failed to return a concrete solution or explanation to the problem.

I have run spybot and i am currently running a virus scan.

Has anyone any idea what has caused this problem and how i could solve it. It could not be a worse time with my Thesis due in 4 weeks :( (luckily i have several backups).

Various searches have returned suggestions such as repairing via a windows boot cd (which i dont have), running a registry scan and repair and checking my hard drive for errors.

Many thanks for any help, any information which i have not given which may be useful to you in aiding me i will try to make available as soon as possible so just ask.

Thanks again

I have run a virus scan and Spybot and nothing seems to have helped.

The computer loads up normally and then crashes when i try to do anything.

It is still working in safe mode.

Can anyone suggest any other things i could try ? If i can't get it fixed today im going to have to go down town first thing to buy a laptop just to finish writing my thesis

I've worked out its something to do with Winlogon, whatever that is.

Running a registry clean up program now to see what that throws up

Have you got Zone Alarm installed?
If so, I'd try removing it.
Other than that, remove any other AV/ firewall; From what I can see this error seems to be commonly caused by broken AV/ firewalls trying to load at Windows startup. As safemode is working, this seems to confirm that :)

Edit: FWIW, Winlogon is basically the process that logs you onto Windows & runs the startup tasks etc.

I have a copy of McAfee that i tried to remove but it didnt remove it all successfully and im unsure how to remove the rest of it.

Has been running fine like that for quite a while though

It just gives me an error when trying to run their tool saying that some McAfee program is already running when its not

Is there anyway to work out if its definatly a software or hardware issue ?

Would a complete reformat be worth while ? What would i need to do this ?

By the looks of it your hard drive is at fault....

Ie its either dieing or something that controls it is on the way out (motherboard chipset, ide/sata cable, bios settings), just from a quick google, which has messed about with your windows install.

My first advice is if you can get into windows, get a disk check on the go asap!

Oh and DONT just re-format it, especially if its crucial to use your machine right now. Chances are its fixable, or you'll atleast be able to work out whats wrong

See if you can get hold of your manufacturers disc testing software, most of them do it.

Failing that get the Hiren CD and use that to test it.

Ive just unintsalled all my antivirus stuff and firewall stuff except that bit of McAfee i cant get rid of and now before it crashes with the same error i get a message about csrss.exe needing to close

Have just tried to restart with no startup items turned on and still encountered the problem

cant work out how to install this HDD testing software

Scratch it and get hold of the Hiren disc, or the ultimate bootcd.

I dont think the installer will work in safe mode, my bad.

Ok update

I decided to run another system restore but went back about 2 months.

Took ages to complete but no issues as of yet

Will keep an eye on it and see what happens
