So here we have it, I didn't go for the 508XD after all. After my demo at 'specialist near elstree studios', the 508 really didn't stand a chance. As soon as I walked in the first thing I noticed was stupidly deep blacks on the new 9G, actually soo much so that i didn't even notice the black bars at the top and bottom of the casino royale picture.

i won't go on, the the although the difference is massive, the 508XD looked much better than the Panasonic PF10 [All tvs were ISF calibrated except the new 9G], and that is the best that panasonic can muster. Pio really are doing one hell of a job.

SD and HD both look sensational, and gaming looks pretty damn fine too. PWM noise is all but gone, retention has not reared it's head once, and to top it off the screen looks pretty snazzy when off too.

Finally, the lighting is provided by a remote control set of LED bars that can be calibrated for all RGB colours. 2 are on top of the screen and one down each side. they can be found in the power buy forum over at avforums, and cost 67 for that specific kit of x4 15inch bars, and the bar sizes can be tailored for your specific tv. you can see the affect they have, and it looks far far better in real life.

Showing off my pio-e-peenarse done, im off to watch resident evil 3 :D:D:D

Looks stunning mate.

What is the second box for? The stand?

And also, what TV unit is that, I'm looking to pick one up when I buy my KDL-40W4000

The box contains the gas for plasma re-gassing ;):D:D:D:D

ya the stand, weighs over 10kg and is made very well. Got the swivel one because the normal ones weren't sent to dealer.

that damn tv unit is always asked about :D It's ikea [I think] as it uses their bolts but is quite an old design so was probably bought for this flat when it was built about 4 years ago. pop over to avforums and search for 'dual lack'. Buy x2 ikea lack tv stands, and you can create a dual or to be accurate 1.5 height lack unit as the normal lacks are a little short. No drilling jsut bolting and a bit of thought needed, built one for the parents.

Dude. Sweet. Totally sweet.
I'll send you over a pack of mini cheddars to keep you fed till your next pay day

Fantastic, bring em over with some beers as Il get thirsty, then watch some films and game :D:D

Out of curiosity can i ask what you paid?

Picture looks amazing :D

Got it slightly cheaper than they are now as i pre-ordered. Tv was 2400 with the stand at 100, and of course the 5yr warranty comes with that. The guys I dealt with were awesome, but can't mention them. A wild hint in my first post, but everything you need to know is over at avforums. Plus il be getting 'bumtious' himself to come and ISF calibrate my set once it has over 250hours on it.

Pity the gf already has got me my birthday present, an ISF voucher would have been sweet.

And my 4mp camera really doesn't show you anything of the picture. Better SD than the 8G, and HD is just mindblowing now, and I thought that the 8G was better than anything I had seen. Honestly, high-end LCD stand no chance, but lets wait and see what LED backlighting does later this year, although im not expecting miracles.

I was going to stick with my 8G. :|

i soo nearly did and wasn't sure if it was worth the extra. but im picky and wasn't happy with the blacks of the 8G and 42 was a touch too small. Got this in the knowledge that I will be wall mounting it when i buy a house in a few years, and it'l be perfect then

Plus pioneer will be sourcing their glass from panasonic now [still making their electronics for it though], so this is the last truly 100% pioneer screen.

i say go have a look, you only live once :D

I didn't realise bumtious was an ISF dude, I thought Gordon was the resident expert over there?

There are a few of them, piers and steve [bumtious]. Steve will be sorting mine out, great guy and really knows what he is doing. He has worked wonders on the sets in 'elstree shops' demo room.

4.25 inches exact, or 108mm :(

But mine is the swivel stand, but probably the same as the one in your picture.

Does 1920x1080p 60hz work from PC, DVI-HDMI? VGA input doesn't support 1920x108 only 1360x768.

Ain't got a clue, don't use PC with the screen and don't even have a DVi to HDMI cable, although I tempted to try one sometime for some 50inch 1080p team fortress 2 :D:D:D

what backlight system are you using? is it integrated into the tv or a second unit?

Got it off avforums, the Apollo LED lighting kits in the lighting power buy section. Awesome kit and makes the setup even better.

love the tv - not so kean on the backlights (esp for £67)

Would really love one of those tv's esp with yearly bonus coming up but I just cant spend that much )-:

Each to their own. I find that it reduces strain on the eyes after long periods, plus it does give the illusion of even darker blacks, but that isn't really needed.

But for some films I do have them off. Gaming looks better with them on though, especially everybodys golf :)

BADBOB: Il have a looky if I can, or maybe even try to get a cheapy dvi-hdmi cable to play with. Im sure it will support it over hdmi, I think it was component that had less functionality.

DEAN: Cheers, You have a good gf, mine gave up and just said buy it already and stop talking about it :D Really should have started saving for a despoist as well, but used the credit card for this and should easily be able to pay it off by Jan so not too bothered.

Starship troopers is my fav disc, and the ultimate demo disk.

You do realise that if you don't have grain then the disc will probably be a US one with DNR all over its ass giving a picture as soft as vhs. Casino royale is an amazing disc, but starship troopers really shows you what blu-ray can really do.

What's the gaming performance like with the new Kuros?

games work, they look nice, very smooth motion, no retention of course. Sorry not much else to say, haven't gamed a lot yet, will give it a go this weekend.

Going to buy a Pioneer 6090 for every room, including the garden shed :-D

ok ok ok plasma fanboi :p :p

Just come back from brick lane and am full of bangladeshi goodness and cobra, time for bed and muchos farting......mmmmmm. :D

If gaming could be 'proven' to be smear-free (or at least, negligible) i'd sooooo get one of these over a Series 6/7 Samsung....

I have my doubts though :P

Samsung = peugot 206
Pioneer = Ferrari F430 Scuderia

Most accurate comparison, especially with the reliability of those frenchy cars.

No problems in gaming, plus the super fast response time of a plasma does help. But for me i prefer the more natural picture again, rather than the un-realistic and too colourful LCD screens. But that's me.

If you buy a smasung, have fun trying to get around problems, new firmwares left right and centre, non existant tech support, and generally dealing with a flawed product :D

Nice TV. The 9G thread with the cars screenshot is very impressive, talking of cars...

They dont make the 206 anymore and it wasnt 1/3 of the price of a F430. What car have you got, let me slate it with whatever I chose that costs 3 times the amount ;)

Over the top example, but it still stands that the samsungs have horrible quality control withteh amount of reported problems and half arsed reapir attempts from engineers who don't know how to cure the faults, which samsung don't care about.

Sorry going off on one, Im going to leave samsung out of this thread, the kuro will beat me for using the name when I get back tonight :D

badbob, I have played with LCDs to tweak them to give a more respectable picture, but they are usually still too colourful, and when you try to remove this I find they can become dulll and lifeless. Not of real interest to me until i get smaller LCds for kitchen etc :)

Then you've gone too far. Reduce colour, reduce backlight, but increase contrast to near maximum. Disable all processing, reduce sharpness all the way down. That way should have a more CRT like picture.

You just need to use a LCD with high contrast relative to backlight, otherwise like you said it looks dull.

I am a noob with them to be quite honest :D

They arn't bad, but still certainly not CRT like. Only thing that reminds me of CRT is the older 8G kuro, I think the 9G surpasses with ease.

hmm can get a Pioneer PDP-5080XD-T with stand and 5 years for £1600. I don't know if if it's worth £1000 more for 1080 and newer gen..

Oooo when you say it that, im not so sure. i did get mine for a bit less and the 508 i was going to get was more expensive, but 1k is a lot of money. Sound is very important too :D

I'll take a look at some Kuros in the shops... i remember seeing one in John Lewis and being rather impressed..

Plus, the Samsung 650/750 52" is around £2200, the 50" Kuro is around £2600 so there's not a 'huuuuuge' difference.... hmmmmmm

I wonder if they'll hook up a PS3/360 and demo some games

If the samsung is that much then there is no way in hell i would recommend one. You pay for what you get, and all that. I thought the sammy would be under 1500, but 2200 is ridiculous.

hahah, well for SD and movies i would never get an LCD to use as my main tv.

As you have realised the processing inside the tv is more than quoting fancy techonolgies, 100hz etc, and a lot of manufacturers push them when in actual fact all they do is destroy a picture and need to be turned off.

Even on my Kuro, ALL noise reduction etc is off, sharpness at minimal, black enhancer off, all other auto picture adjustments off, and colours turned down and tweaked to give a more realistic image. Just look at these 2 pictures and tell me which one is the better one, then il tell you what tvs they are off.

Correct there lads.

It's not a perfect test with the pictures slightly out time wise, viewing on our own screen, and not knowing the setup settings of each of the tvs in question, but it still shows how bad some tvs can look, and I think side by side in store a lot of the general public would choose 2 because it is more colourful etc. But it actually loses detail as it is oversharpened, especially on the beard hairs, and clearly on the white pillow casing.

So:

A = 8G Kuro
B = latest philips LCd (can't remember model number).

nb. put wimbledon on, great great tennis between fed and nadal, and it looks smashing on the kuro. Who needs HD or freesat :p

Mate, you should try watching it HD on a Kuro, like I've been doing to the last two weeks ;)

:mad::mad: :p:p

Found under a faceplate this week on my wall in the flat that we have a cable from the communal sat dish. Too late otherwise I would have got a freesat box for the Euros and wimbledon.

Will wait until next year then will get one when they are cheaper and hopefully more content is available. Really need C4 HD to come to freesat but dunno if and when they will come out of any contract with sky.

Enjoy the final, it is an awesome spectal of power and skill. I think nadal will have it in the next 20mins :D

If you see one of these then the standard setup is appauling.

Get the remote, put the picture in MOVIE mode. That will make it infinately better Then tune these: contrast 32, brightness 0, colour -2, shaprness -13, go into picture detail and turn off DRE

Should make it better without having to go mad with other settings.
