Stop the bin smelling?

Hi All,

Does anyone here using something to stop there pedal bin smelling?

I've found it seems to be the black plastic bit seems to absorb the nasty smells.

We use a bin liner, but doesn't make any difference, the bin gets cleaned about once a week (usually when we remove the liner)

Something like Dettol and hot water seem to be the cure for me. give it a good scrub. Its not pretty but it does the job

get a small bin and empty it more often
just empty it more often
dont put food waste in it.
rinse food containers before you put them in (assuming they don't go in recycling)

Wash out smelly containers and things before throwing in the bin.

Also if you're throwing away unused meats and things quite a bit before they're emptied, especially this time of year in the warmth - they absolutely stink after a few days.

Use better quality bin liners, and empty more regularly.

We have a couple of small Brabantia size C bins for general kitchen waste, and use the Brabantia liners for them. As they're small they get changed every 2-3 days, and the bins themselves don't small at all, after ~3 years of using. Never really clean hte inside of the bin, as the bags do their job.

We use a bin liner and when the bags full I take it out in a morning before work and add a bit of diluted zaflora and then leave it to stand all day, seems to do the trick.

Wrap all your waste in yesterday's news paper. Been doing it for years and bin is fresh and clean.

I washed mine in boiling water and bleach a month ago and it's still fresh as anything.

I use a bin bag and just empty it when it's full. I deep clean it either with the garden hose or in the shower maybe once a year, or if I spill something by missing the bag somehow... It never really smells at all.

I can't remember where, but the GF read that putting cat litter in the bottom of the bin (then the bin bag, if it wasn't obvious) absorbs smells, leakages etc.

I've done it for years since and not had much in the way of smells, particularly with liquid "bin juice" leaking through the bag or finding it's way to the bottom of the bin.

I bought a smart price bag for about £1.50 and I've still got most of it left!

I'm shocked you can manage to only need one bin liner per week. Mind you, I'm in a house of 3 people.
But saying that we have seperate containers for plastic/bottles/glass/tins and a food waste bucket, we still use more than one bin liner a week.

Thinking about it, what the hell are we binning! haha

There's only 2 of us and I'd say 99% of plastics, glass etc... go in the recycling. We also put all off cuts of veg etc... in a separate recycling bin as well so there's very rarely leaky stuff in.

We have some cat litter laying about so might give the bin a wash tonight and stick some of that in the bin liner see if it helps.

Salt. Put a thick layer of salt at the bottom of your bin. Any leakages are absorbed and smells prevented. I wash out the bin every 6 months or so. Works a treat.
