Stop Vista 'finding' network location

Is there any way to stop Vista from trying to access a network location continuously?

I have shortcuts to a few shared directories on the network in my links on the left hand side of folders - basically when I drag something across and accidentally hover over a network location that's down the whole Explorer will near on freeze until the connection times out.

Any ideas how to reduce the timeout or completely stop Vista from trying to connect more than once?

not really a solution, but could you move them into their own folder?

That'd kind of defeat the purpose of having them in my 'Favourite Links' on the left hand side of folders :/
