Just got to uni, and every time I plug in my external monitor the audio automatically switches to that instead of my headphone socket.

Selecting the headphones as output in settings doesn't make a difference as when I reopen settings, it has changed back.

Is there any way to force it to go through headphones only?

Thanks.

Would it make any difference if you actually disable the hdmi output in playback devices?

Not sure if it would re-enable itself when it is plugged in though.

The only thing I can think of is going to Preferences and changing manually, but by the looks of this you have already tried that.

It re-enables itself when plugged back in. Also, even when the headphone output is selected, the icon is still greyed out in the top right corner, and hence doesn't work.

I usually just hold down ALT and click the speaker icon to choose which output device I want to use, but I'm assuming this is the same as going through sys prefs. Worth a try though perhaps?

For anyone that is interested, I solved it by plugging the headphone jack in last. Its a bit crude having to unplug it every time I shut down my laptop, but it works at least.
