stopping icons shifting after updating on iphone

Right, am a bit annoyed after moving round my icons for the last time. Vanilla iphone user here, and want to know how to stop icons for installed apps moving to the end of the icon que after you update them. cos having to move scroll them back two screens (soon to be three), is a bit annoying.

Update them from iTunes, I think that way they stay the same. After my recent experiences, I won't be updating apps (or installing them for that matter) from the phone any more!

but that means you have to browse from itunes.... sigh. no more on the bus wondering what aps can i download today....
and syncing apps that have been downloaded from phone onto pute with itunes is not without hazard either; once it wiped all the apps from the phone. which left me thoroughly confused...
