Stopping smoking - Champix

I used Champix and several of my friends have too. I only really go slight nausea from the pills for about 20 minutes after. The biggest side effeect was the dreaming!

haha :D another one like me who has mad dreams. I had MENTAL dreams when on champix lol. I'd wake up and go to myself...WTF was that dream all about. :p

From dancing werewolves to being chased by bags of coal...i had some mad dreams lol...

Hey mate,

Good luck to you! I'm five days in and currently cold turkey! Having smoked for the last nine years I'm finding it pretty hard but between work I have been out kayaking and found keeping busy has helped a lot!

Its been 3 years since I quit, was about 20/day. Started smoking at 16 until I was 21. I done it by buying a big pack of nicotine gum, chewed one every time instead of smoking. Once the pack was done I never bought any more and went cold turkey from there.

Don't let yourself believe that its too hard. Its not. Its more a mental struggle than anything else. Just be in control of your own mind.

I've spoken before about how I quit in several threads just like this one so I won't go through the whole thing again.

If you really want to quit then you will. If you don't really want to quit then you may not. Do you really, absolutely, positively want to stop? No ifs or buts or 'but I'm cutting down' rubbish. Do you never want to smoke a cigarette ever again?

Never a truer word spoken magnolia! I've been with girl in the past who want me to quit for them!

That'll never work, you'll need to quit for yourself and yourself only!

Mind over matter... MIND OVER MATTER!! I hear you guys.

I have been smoking for the last 26 years. When I gave up before with the patches I found it sooo easy, I was shocked at how easy it was but then I had a real bad time with the last job and stupidly started again. I used them as a crutch when I really didint need to.

I realise the thought's that run through my head like "how am I going to cope without them" and its just the drugs/nicotine dependency talking. I have quit before so I CAN do it again.... and for good I hope! Wish I had never started. You know I could have prolly bought myself the new Nissan GTR with all the cash I spent on the cigs! ;)

I tried Champix, managed about 3 days before the sickness got so bad I gave up taking them. Fortunately I also gave up smoking off the back of that as I thought there was no ******* way I was going to put myself through that. Found it much easier giving up cold turkey than putting up with the side effects. Oddly, my girlfriends brother was on them at the same time and he got none of the side effects. But he has since started smoking again.

As already said if you really want to give up then you will and it won't be all that difficult.

You went so many years prior to smoking without needing them so what's different now? Nothing. You don't need them. Whether or not you want them is a different matter, but that's all in the mind.

Do you exercise or work out? How is your fitness? Try doing some exercise to get the heart pumping, maybe a beginners running plan, couch to 5k or similar. This really helped me as if you are unfit then you will find it hard enough already and the last thing you will want to do is have a fag and make it harder for yourself. It will also give you something else to focus on and take your mind off it.

Also have you worked out how much money you are saving by quitting? With the cost of fags these days I bet it's a fair amount. Give yourself a goal to put that money towards something.. a holiday for the family maybe? Keep the amount visible too in a separate savings account or money jar or anything. That should help keep you motivated!

Interesting reading, when i wanted to stop, it took 1 second, i said ok, i stop now, then i stopped, that was 7 years ago.

No I dont exercise, never enjoyed it. Yes I will go out for walks and stuff which is gentile but running/heavy exercise... dont enjoy it at all.

As for the money, yes I have something I do want so will put it aside for that!

Good post from magnolia, i almost put him on my ignore list earlier today for those weird vids he put in the youtube thread :D, glad i didn't now.

Being a relapsing smoker myself over the last 10 years and getting older (32), my body is starting to feel the damage so i've gotta do something about it. My intake is gradually increasing from 10 to around 15 a day, and i really don't wanna start spending £6 a day on fags forever so it's gotta go. I even went the rollup route for a short period but those brown fingers are proper minging and i smoked more so i went back to fags.

I'll be going cold turkey. I've done it 2 or 3 times before, first 3 days or so are hardest, after that i just forget about them until it's in my face again such as pubs.
One of my favourite methods for those craving moments is to put some water in a jar and put my fagends in that. Put the lid back on to keep the smell in, and take a whiff when you're craving. Worked for me. Also download the widget from the NHS website which tells you how much you've saved since quitting.

Hey all, I have not had a smoke for 3 days now!!! Feel great for it!

Champix is working great. I'm using nicassist inhalator (with SPENT cartridge) so Im giving my hands & mouth something to do.

Its wierd but when I have that in my gob I dont tend to think about smoking. The thing thats most difficult are the triggers for smoking. Getting up and the first thing I did was light up, after a meal, in the car on the way to/back from work or if im board and so on.

I'M WINNING! :)

PS - im putting £8 a day into a savings account and in 6 months time I will have around 1.5k to spend on a new 27" display & graphics card/s....maybe a SSD as well! :) ;)

Well done mate. Keep it up. I've been trying to stop for the past few years now and I can only manage a week max without smoking. I'm determined to give it another go once my cheap polish fags have run out.

What is this champix stuff? Another version of Nicorette? I'm tempted to give these e-cigs a go

How does it work?

Champix tablets contain the active ingredient varenicline, which is a medicine used to help people who are addicted to nicotine to give up smoking. It acts in the brain, but is not the same as nicotine replacement therapy.

Varenicline is a type of medicine called a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor partial agonist. This means that it acts on the same receptors in the brain as nicotine.

Varenicline works by stimulating the nicotinic receptors in the brain. This produces an effect that relieves the craving and withdrawal symptoms you can get when you stop smoking.

At the same time, varenicline blocks nicotine from acting on the nicotinic receptors. This prevents any nicotine inhaled in tobacco smoke from having a rewarding and enjoyable effect.

You should set a date on which you will stop smoking and start taking this medicine one to two weeks beforehand. This is because the medicine needs time to start working.

The dose is increased gradually in the first week of treatment (follow the instructions given by your doctor or pharmacist) and the medicine should then be taken twice a day for 12 weeks. If you have successfully managed to stop smoking at the end of 12 weeks, your doctor may offer you a further 12 week course of treatment.

The tablets should be swallowed whole with a drink of water. They can be taken with or without food.

Having quit smoking for 98days thanks to Champix, the only side-effect I got was occasionally I ended up with an absolutely mind blowing headache. 1 that no quantity of drug helped, it was more a case of take a few paracetamol n nurofen, then go to sleep. Even then it didn't always help. Didn't experience any of the weird dreams, apart from recently when I dreamt about lighting up a smoke... then I woke up :s

1 of the biggest problems I found was changing my habbits though. Not going out for a smoke during breaks @ work, not smoking while driving for the sake of smoking because I was driving. Once I had started to break the habbits, then the rest came easy.

I did put on some weight while I was taking the tablets, and despite it meant to be a 3 month course of the tablets, I felt neither a need/want for the tablets or smoking after the 3rd week. So I went back and told my nurse I didn't need any more tablets, and she signed me off smoke free! Still got 1 pack full because I started missing taking the tablets, but still felt no need for the smokes!

As I said at the begining, that was 98 days ago, and apart from a few ridiculous headaches and 1 weird recent dream(tablet unrelated) the Champix has been fantastic! :)

The best way to stop is to use WILL POWER!

I smoked for 6 years at 5-10 a day. One morning I noticed brown tar stains in between my teeth. I was horrified because my teeth cost a fortune (two years of braces and two fake teeth).

I decided to stop there and then and I have never smoked again.

All these quit smoking methods only make smoking more precious to the person trying to give up and end up getting you more addicted to nicotine.
Just stop. You are in control of your own body!
