Possibly a stupid question, and if so ill plead ignorance because i've only been using Apple hardware/software for 6 days now!

Basically - can i turn off the "noise" my Macbook makes when booting (initial BIOS post bit, where it displays a grey sceen and small grey Apple logo in the middle!) as it annoys me.

Thanks :p

Check out the sticky in the software thread.

It has a quick tip for this, not sure if it works for the boot sound, but it does work for alerts.

Changing the Alert Volume

As far as your speaker volume is concerned, there are two categories of sound in OS X: alert beeps (noises that you hear when your system does something it's proud of, such as receiving an e-mail, or concerned about, such as crashing a program) and overall volume (the sound level for playing CDs, MP3s, and Doom). The volume control in your menu bar (which you can turn on in the Sound panel of System Preferences) changes the overall system volume. But if you drag the slider while holding the option key, you change only the alert volume.
The obvious workaround is to mute before you shut down, or install the prefpane above.

Mac OS 10.4 has a seperate slider for alert volume, the tip above doesn't work.

The sound when the Mac boots isn't covered by the alert volume either, the only way I know of to get rid of it is that prefpane.
