Stoptober|NHS Campaign

This is what causes the apocolypse isn't it! A massive reduction in smokers cause half the nation to turn into mad raving loonatics that in turn take to the streets. In the meantime the environment can't handle the sudden dramatic loss of carbon dioxide and we slip into an iceage.

MAYANS 2012

Did you not read my whole post? If smokers are MORE than paying for themselves, that fatter budget would give us less corpses and weeping families..

only if you are so spectacularly retarded as to think a small amount of more money some how reduces deaths compared to a reduction in cancers and heart disease.

People are living longer anyway, this is being taken into consideration by gradual increases in the pensionable age and the fact that people will _have_ to work longer just to be able to get by as they get older.

Doesn't really solve the fact that many people are incapable of working for longer periods because of the fact they're living longer

I was going to do this, but then thought "Why wait until October?". Bought myself an e-cig starter kit last week and haven't had a fag since Saturday. I've been smoking for nearly 25 years, 20-30 rollies a day and have never had any luck giving up before.

Whilst I agree e-cigs may be a bit of an unknown with regards to long term health, there's no doubt they are not as bad as fags. I can already feel my throat clearing after just three days.

Good luck to anyone else giving this a go.

having spent the weekend working on an oncology ward, I would recommend that you give up if you smoke, quite a few patients seriously ill with lung cancer from smoking, really isnt a pleasant way to go!

I can't see how all smokers stopping would be a beneficial thing for the country.
I'll happily have someone say I'm wrong and tell me the figures, but don't smokers provide a healthy cash lining to the governments pockets?

They also provide an un-healthy lining on their lungs etc meaning NHS probably spends more on healing these people than they spend on smoking.

I've never smoked in my life and never plan to :)

it is not just a matter of smoking, it's a matter of healthy life in general.
my gf's uncle, footballer, never smoked a cig in his life, always a maniac with healthy eating, never ate a single fast food in his life, always running everyday until he was 42... when he dropped dead.

One of my grandfather's died from lung cancer but that was on top of a disease which I do not know what it's called in English, but he was cutting marble when he was working and all the dust went into his lungs etc etc.
He used to smoke every day, drink alcohol everyday from 4am generally living a very unhealthy life.
He was 78 when gone but he was ok until he was 77.

Second grandfather. Builder. Worked hard all his life, health maniac, living a quiet life but exercising all day due to the type of his work(no machines back in his day). Parkinsons disease. Couldn't even walk to the toilet without falling down, peeing himself and catching pneumonia. Died at 72. Was like that for 5 maybe more years.

My father's family, all of the females died at 30 because of cancer. None of them ever smoked (hell there wasn't even tobacco when my great-great-great-grandmother lived and died).

Point is, you never know how you are going to die. It might be cancer, it might be from heart attack, maybe a stroke. You never know.
Enjoy life as you see fit, have fun and don't care what anyone else says.

Personally, I smoke one cigarette a day after work nowadays, except on the weekend when I go out I might smoke around 5. I exercise everyday and eat healthy, try to avoid fast food, eat my vegetables, take my vitamins and sleep well. If cancer comes knocking on my door, let him come, I'm not gonna stare death in the eyes with a pathetic "why didn't I live my life the way I wanted" look, I like smoking, I am NOT addicted and I will continue to smoke until I've had enough(or die of lung cancer).

Anyhow, good luck to all of you that want to quit, all the best. The thing to remember is do not be enslaved to a substance.

not fussed by this tbh... if people want to smoke, die young, pay excessive tax to fund their addiction then go for it. They're banned from doing it in pubs etc.., banned from doing it on public transport - we should probably also ban it from parks and a few other areas - but its probably useful to still have a % of society who are dumb enough to pay lots of tax on a product that doesn't do much other than feed a craving for that product and kill them early - they'll save us a lot of money on pensions, retirement care etc.. when they die from lung cancer shorty after retirement.

I've never smoked so have never been addicted to it, but I can appreciate that the addiction must be incredibly strong to make people want to stand in the cold and the rain just to have a cigarette. So on that grounds I wish anyone aiming to quit over October, or at any time, the best of luck.

Had a bit of a shock this week that my Mother has been telling me lies for 27 years.
She quit smoking when she was 50 and never did it again except I did see a picture of her on holiday smoking in a Spanish bar.
For years she has claimed to others that she quit 27 years ago but this week I've found out she still smokes.
My daughters have known for years but decided not to tell me (not as if I'd do anything anyway, it's her life).
Last tuesday I could smell smoke in my car when she got back in from the pub we had a meal at and then I remembered hearing a woman say that an old woman was smoking in the ladies toilet.
Her house does smell of smoke sometimes but she always claimed it was her best mate who she lets smoke in the house.
I feel a bit cheated however she isn't the 20/day she was from the age of 14 to 50.
