Hi guys,

I'm having a little issue hunting down a case. If has to hold the following:

12 x 3.5" Disks.
04 x 2.5" SSD's. - These can be slotted about so not critical.
UATX motherboard.

I would prefer to place it on it's side rather than vertical and would prefer a window in the 'top' (where possible)

I was thinking of getting a 3U server rack case but the 12 bays stop that without spending silly money (£300+)

Any suggestions?

H440 new edition. You can fit 12 3.5 drives and 2 ssd's. Not side mounted.

For a cube case look at the fractal 804 can hold 10 3.5 drives
Added to my list:)

Don`t suppose you can find a cube type? That takes ATX size?:D
Currently the
Thermaltake Core X9 E-ATX Cube Chassis is looking favourite

Would we not need some small height cooler for the cpu in that case

You don't need a specific low profile cooler as 3U is nearly as tall as a normal case is wide e.g. a Standard AMD or Intel cooler would be fine. If you are planning on a third party cooler, then yes you would need to check it will physically fit.

what would the cooling be like I wonder(personally I am looking for a NAS capable case for multiple drives)

Cooling should be fine, although is likely to be on the noisy side (80mm fans in the centre, and 60mm fans required for the rear)

mmmm added to my shortlist :D
How about psu cable length?
But i suppose with 14 bays quite a few sata adapters would be needed:p
Maybe the 4U option (possibility for bigger cpu heatsink in these)that has 10 bays+3x5.25mmmm gonna need to have a long look at all these options i think. Thanks for the suggestions did not consider rackmount

Oohhhh, With my damn head cold I'd forgotten about this thread.

Liking all options, and that Thermaltake Core X9 looks sweet. (I do have a soft spot for stackables)

I'll pick one over the weekend and then, onto my first build log :)

Many thanks for the suggestions all, and the bump Andarial.

Went for a 4U Standard Chassis 15 x 3.5" HDD in the end
The core x9 would be a bit chunky for the storage cupboard
This thing is HUGE:eek:,reasonably priced and has 9 fans in total all for £67.22 with free delivery(sorry ocuk you did not have one)
Will need to either volt mod the fans or change them as they being server fans sound like a jet engine :p
What size psu can I get away with?
Will be used for an Xpenology server so max 12b drives eventually, low spec gfx, abit ip35 pro with a q6600 not oc and a sata expansion card(pci)
Got a spare 500w enermax but would need to get a few sata plug adapters

The 650mm version I guess of the 550mm Easystore? 3x120 in fan wall, 3 in front of case (intakes) and 2 x 80mm exhausts.. Where is #9? Do you have the fan specs? Was looking at this for my unRAID box...

Ah, I have some ideas for that...

Have you tried to see if the front 4x80s can be replaced by 3x120 and the drive cage still swing? Thin 120s?

What about 120s mounted in front of the cage but not TO the cage? Either cable tied to make a wall or attached to the front grill.

Got the fan models (for Googling specs) supplied? I'm not keen on 80s of any sort but not much choice at the rear is there?

re your PSU question try this http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator and see what it says

upped a few pics for you to have a look at
re front 80mm fans and 120mm ones too for that matter
Damn loud on 12v:mad:
So fitted a 7v mod to the fan hubs;) nice and quiet now,but moves a lot less air obviously
Looks to be plenty enough gap to fit 120mm to front of drive bay caddy if you wanted to

Tried out that psu calc and it looks like at full capacity I should be fine http://outervision.com/b/a4Rii5
I also have an E6700 i could swap out the quad for http://outervision.com/b/OggR8A
The 120mm are 4 pin pwm and the 80mm are 3pin but with only 2 cables(the 3 cables you might be able to see are fan extensions from the rear 80mm fans)

Thanks for the pics!

Looks awfully tight between those 2 HDDs at bottom.. How will any air get to the bottom one? Also, with your small mobo you might have looked at the 550mm version?

Interested to see how well it cools with 12 (your PSU Calc setup) or even 15 drives.

Wanted a case that would hold upto 12 drives (xpenology)
Not fired up the system inside the case yet, still waiting on a few sata cables
Yeah very tight on those drives but I have to assume that the fans would take care of any heat.I mean it was designed for 15 drives
If I popped a spare geforce 8400 gs in I could get the power down a bit more to http://outervision.com/b/hK0zTo

Playing around with the case and a xpen setup
Currently have 3 hdds in bottom cage, front and rear 80mm fans only at about 75% power, still quite noisy but if i lower the speed too much the molex rheostat will burn my fingers
Temps of hdds while scrubbing is 30,39,42

42 is toasty... I'd dump those fans for some Nanoxia DS fans... Good for airflow AND static pressure so might be able to push air through those small gaps. My 550mm version is now in shipping.

Not installed the second bank of fans yet
Not 100% happy with this setup, mobo went breasts up,needed a new bios chip and first pcie is dead now
As said still playing atm
EDIT
Had a look at those Nanoxia DS fans.Bit pricey!
I would need 6 ideally and that would come to around £41,as I only paid £57 for the whole case it is too expensive in my mind :)
