Hi

Small issue i need to store some files, around 2 TB. I dont really want to buy a pc, so i was thinking of getting a NAS storage drive. I see these can be had with 2 500GB drives in them so i would require two of course.

Only thing is, would it be better to just buy a basic spec pc and just slot in 4 500 gb drive and setup a raid config to mirror some of the data incase of failure.

I had a similar requirement and opted for the Thecus N5200 NAS. It has five HDD bays which gives (presently) a max of 5x750GB drives. The 1TB drives will become certified shortly i would suspect. It uses very little power and does what it needs to do nicely. It's also small, although does carry a price premium over buying and building a PC separately - although when i weighed it up, I think it's advantages outweigh the price differential.

EDIT: TYPO, LAST LINE CHANGED WHICH TOTALLY CHANGES WHAT I MEANT TO SAY. (i.e. I say go for the NAS unless you would find having a proper OS handy).

You should spec up a NAS to meet your needs then compare that to a used SFF PC or, though OcUK does not sell them, perhaps a new Via C3-based low-power system. Pop a flavor of Linux (Debian is perfect) on it and install Samba. If the PC is cheaper go for that. :)
