I have a laptop that is working ok apart from the fact that any storage drives added are not visable.

If i plug in an external hdd or usb drive windows installs the drivers but they can't be seen in my computer (All have been formatted). Also the dvd drive is not showing in my computer. I have tried assigning drive letters, it goes through the process as if it is doing it but they still don't show. It seem to be any type of storage drive is not showing. I have tried the so called microsoft fixes which don't work either. I have also tried removing the hdd and installing a fresh copy of windows on a different hdd, bios sees it but but refuses to install windows onto it.

Anyone have any suggestions.

Running win7 home

Thanks for the link. Have just tried all the methods listed and still the same.

Anymore suggestions please. This problem is getting to me now.

ps. keyboards mice and other usb devices are detected just fine it just seems to be anything with storage.

Uses usb 2.0. Also the same with usb pendrives. They used to work just fine and all of a sudden they stopped. Not sure what happened as it's not my laptop. My wife said something about the autostart thing that pops up when you insert a cd.

Have you tried installing/re-installing the chip-set drivers for the laptop

Not sure how to do this, could you give me details?

Have checked all usb drivers and they are all there thanks for the link may try it anyway.

The laptop is Asus X5DIJ

Looks like the

chipset is Intel GL40 rev 07
and
Southbridge is Intel 8280 1 IM (ICH9-M) rev 03

Sorry i didn't make myself clear. I'm not sure how to go about uninstalling and then re-installing the chipset drivers never done this before. Don't know what to look for or where to find them on the laptop.

Well i tried that and it is still the same. Thanks anyway.;)

I have noticed that if i boot into safe mode i am able to assign a drive letter and it is fine. Only when i boot up normal mode afterwards it is back to not showing. When i try it in normal mode it shows for a couple of seconds then dissapears from my compuer again.

Anything else you can suggest would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all your help anyway.;)

I thought it may be a hardware fault in the begining, but when they are available in safe mode made me think otherwise.

Thanks again for all your help. Have just managed to put another hdd in and install win7 on it and everything works just fine. I have just put original hdd back in and are looking to find out if i can somehow find a way of repairing or doing something with the recovery discs to get things working, without losing stuff that is on the laptop.
