Hi all,

What are your thoughts on Storage Spaces in Win 8 / 2012 essentials, etc?

I've been using them for a while now and feel that, when it's working, it's OK. but it's fragile and very immature (can't just hot swap or remove disks, etc).

I was thinking instead of chucking in a cheapo 3WARE 8 port PCI-X SATA card with 0,1,10,5 and JBOD to attach my disks too and let it do all the work.

I would always prefer hardware RAID over software, but haven't had the chance to have a cheapo 3WARE card before

Thoughts?

Anyone got any thoughts on Storage Spaces? I've done a search, but not much luck and I can't find much feedback on it via google.

I'm looking into pooling my file server storage drives. I'd like to be able to add/remove drives easily and preferably (though I know Storage Spaces doesn't do this) remove a drive and read it independently on a different PC. I'm not too bothered about redundancy, as long as I only lose 1 drives worth of data.

Running Server 2012 R2

Any thoughts? Alternative software pros and cons?

Storages Spaces on 2012 R2 is much better than the Win8/8.1 feature, with slightly more control. However, I still don't think you can do the remove / read (you wouldn't be able to with any software or hardware RAID disk).
