Currently using a 120gb OCZ agility as my main drive, OS etc...

Wanting to replace my secondary harddrive (200gb ancient HDD)

Using around 200gb across the two drives...

Question - Whats the best upgrade route?

Another SSD, say 120/256gb or, sell current SSD and get a single say 256/512gb SSD

& any particular SSD to go with, good idea to match SSD's for possibility of raid'ing them?

cheers !

I'd get a new 256gb SSD, put your OS and everything that you commonly use on it, use your existing SSD as your secondary drive.

That's assuming that your storage needs are not going to suddenly increase. If you need lots of extra space, then a new secondary HDD would make more sense.

Thanks for the replies...

The main reason for wanting rid of the HDD is the noise/vibrations, the thing is ancient and is constantly hammering the hard disk during gaming (Louder/audible over a 7970 @ 60% fan speed -_- )

In terms of space, i'll use no more than 200gb, but having a SSD more than 75% full, isn't good, right?

With a 250GB SSD, you'll be able to install and run everything from it. You will benefit from maximum performance (faster loading apps/games/game levels) and zero noise/vibration.

As I stated earlier, if you have no need or intention of storing much more than 200GB, then a 250/256GB SSD makes a lot of sense. You can get rid of your slow/noisy HDD and benefit from having everything running from your new SSD.

As wazza300 advised, 10gb free space should be OK for an SSD. Samsung's Over provisioning "hides" 10% of the SSD's capacity to make sure you don't over fill it (Samsung obviously feel that reserving 10% capacity is a good idea - other SSDs may not need as much free space to perform optimally). It may not be wise to leave much less than 10gb of free space on a 120gb SSD though.

Thanks again for the replies :)

Last question -

If I were to get another identicle SSD, and were to run them in raid 0 without any other form of backup/secondary drive, how risky/advisable is this?

Cheers again.

Risky !

If one of your SSD fails, then you are likely to lose your data, certainly if you use Raid 0 (which "combines" two drives into one and increases performance). I'm not to sure of how other Raid modes work, maybe someone with more experience can advise. Raid or no raid, you should always have backups of important data.

I still think you best option would be to buy a larger SSD and use your existing SSD as a backup/extra storage drive. It's the easiest and probably safest option. A slightly cheaper option would be to buy a new secondary HDD, which should be a bit quieter than your existing drive and give you lots of storage capacity for not a large outlay.

I know if I were in your situation, I'd go with a 250/256GB SSD, assuming that you can afford the upgrade.

if your 100% not gonna use more than 200gb then maybe go for an ssd but tbh you can get a hell of a lot more hdd storage for the money hence a cheap 2tb hdd and stick all your games/music/films onto that

its still gonna be quieter than your old 200gb hdd

It comes down to quantity or quality, I suppose.

I prefer all my apps and games to be on my SSD, HDDs are used to archive stuff and for backups.

And even modern HHDs are noisy in a quiet room (the "whine" of 7200rpm). My secondary HDDs are "asleep" 99% of the time, it's suprising how annoying they are when they have to be used !

~£140 for 250GB of SSD storage is well worth the money, IMHO.
