Storing data in a php system, not sure if a database is right

I am making a system for Lan parties, where people can organise games, discuses things and access everyone else's Steam profiles etc. Anyway, I want to have a chat system where the users will be able to discuss a certain game, games in geranial and non-gaming stuff.

I am already using a SQL database for users and game info, but would a database is right for chat?

Not really like a IR type chat or a forum type chat, more like a Facebook type post\comment conversation.
