Has anyone got any recomendation on the best way to back up copies of my digital photos both in terms of software and hardware. Ideally i would like a program that can recognise when I have both RAW and Jpeg copies of photos and only back up the RAW ones. From the Hardware perspective is it better to back up to CD or DVD. I know DVD can hold more but is the format suitable for long term storage?

Personally, I have an extra HDD devoted to backing up my photos.
Obviously, periodic burning to CD and DVD is a good idea too, but for ~£50 and a quick copy+paste a dedicated harddrive has to be the easiest way forward.

I prefer to backup manually, that way I can be sure it's done correctly :) I use DVD's and a backup Hard Drive.

Retrospect can be set to auto backup drives or selected folders. You can use DVD's, extrernal/removable drives, internal drives, tape or a combination of for added redundancy.

Well I have experienced a lot of trouble with CDs returning with Cyric Redudencey Check or something.. I havent backed up a thing photography wise (which is quite worrying as its over 40Gig)

I would always keep them on hard drive for constant access to them.. Also to DVD. and then one day prob a second hard drive for further back up..

fortunately for me my with my powerbook you can make a smart folder that seperates the .CRW files and then puts them into a burnable folder.. job done

but i also use a 80 ext hdd as thats easy to access.

sorry if thats no help whatsoever :p

I have become paranoid about this and until last week backed up all my photos to three separate PCs!

Now I use a Netgear SC101 network attached storage unit with mirrored drives and back this up to one PC. This allows me to access all my files from any PC.

I also periodically back up all my images to DVD.

:)

It is known as the toaster in Netgear circles.......

It does get hot and would probably keep a cup of coffee hot for a wee while. I got round this (like all not so good modders do) by removing the front cover.

Now it matches both my coverless shuttles and my "side off" tower system. Wouldn't it to be thinking it is special now.

cheers
