Just wondering where people with wills have stored the original hard copy?

My solicitor has told me they can't, and alternatives are national probate service, or simply at home with my other legal documents.

There is no legal requirement for a will to be store anywhere in particular.

The cost of insurance/fire proof storage and size of storage is expensive for a solicitor and in some cases, causes issues if it gets lost/misplaced etc which has happened.

Personally I have it stored at home in a fireproof/waterproof storage box from Amazon (cost me about £30). Spare copy with another family member elsewhere in a similar box.

My parents and myself our wills in fireproof lockable boxes. Have a key for each too.

Also have copies at Will makers. Sometimes you need the wills immediately.

We have ours stored with the writers, included in the storage fee was unlimited amendments so we just go online and make the amendments and our will is automatically updated.

We also have a hard copy in our safe

How do you make amendments online if they’re not being witnessed and new docs signed? Asking as we need to make some tweaks to ours and it’s a pain getting them witnessed every time.

Above my computer, there is a cupboard with 4 labelled magazine stands inside it.

- paperwork
- bills / tax / mortgage
- receipts / warranties
- user manuals

I haven't got a will yet, but not far off now once my mortgage is paid off, then I'll put my house in my will. When I'm gone, the cupboard above my computer (which is visible when you enter my front door) will be a fairly obvious starting place to look. Then go through the labelled magazine stands, starting with no.1. It will be an an A4 beige envelope labelled "will".

Conversationally though, this doesn't always work as I have a friend who recently lost both parents to dementia. In their paperwork box, he did find an envelope with "will" written on it but it had been ripped open and its contents taken. He doesn't have any leads i.e. which issuing company it was or which solicitor. So him and his 2 brothers have been fighting over it for the past 18 months and it's become pretty toxic to the point that they're falling out. Quite sad if you ask.

When my dad died I was entitled to some of his wedge, but my half brother and half sister kept it quiet, my uncle told me. I just forgot about it, they're already a pair of losers so wasn't prepared to drag myself down to their level.

Sorry for the late reply, just asked the missus and they send over paper copies for us to sign and get witnessed and return which they then hold while we keep a copy
